Panthers Toppled by Saxons

Alfred, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's soccer team was back on the road this weekend as they traveled to Alfred for a non-conference tilt with the Saxons. The Panthers faced an offensive onslaught, falling to the Saxons 5-0.

The Panthers struggled to maintain possession against the Alfred pressure, failing to escape their end and advance far enough into the offensive half to muster a shot. Despite the constant pressure, the Panther defense, led by goalkeeper Alyssa Andersen was stubborn. Despite facing 55 total shots, including 24 on target, they were able to hold the hosts to 5 goals.

Andersen made a pair of early saves before Alfred opened the scoring in the 11th. After the Panthers cleared a free kick, a Saxons midfielder whipped a long shot towards goal from outside the box, finding the bottom corner to put the Saxons ahead.

After the goal, the attack continued, but Andersen made 5 more stops, while also getting some help from Makartnee Mortimer to keep the deficit at one. After Andersen was able to make a stop on a breakaway opportunity, Mortimer dropped back to cover the vacated goal line. The Saxons regained control after the save and unleashed a long shot trying to catch Andersen out of the goal, but the effort was parried away by the freshman center-back.

The hosts were able to score two minutes later as a forward tapped in a cross from a yard away. The Panthers hoped to get to the halftime break with just a two-goal deficit, but Alfred was able to score a third in the 40th minute. They were able to beat the offside trap, setting up a breakaway and simple finish for the Saxon striker.

Andersen started the second half strong, making four additional stops to keep the lead at three. The hosts were able to add to their lead in the 65th minute with a goal off the wing and scored their fifth and final goal in the 80th minute on a curling shot that found the left corner.

Alyssa Andersen finished the game with 18 saves. Makartnee Mortimer added a save when she cleared the ball off the line in the 1st half.

The Panthers fall to 0-3 with the loss. They will be back in action on Wednesday, September 13th, as they will host Westminster as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. They will play the first game, with kickoff slated for 6:00 p.m. The game will be held at Paul R. Miller Stadium in Kane, Pa.
