Lady Panthers cruise past Lycoming, 7-2

BRADFORD, Pa. – The Pitt-Bradford women's soccer team used a strong offensive performance to cruise past visiting Lycoming, 7-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Kessel Athletic Complex.

Pitt-Bradford (3-0) tallied an astonishing 35 shots at the opposing keeper during the match. Lycoming (0-4) registered just seven.

Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Dailey needed just one half in between the posts to keep the Warriors scoreless. Pitt-Bradford carried a 5-0 deficit into the locker room at the break. In the second period, it was sophomore Brooke Redfern getting a turn in the net. Redfern had eight saves in her half of play.

The goals came early and often for the Panthers' offense during the route. Just eight minutes into the action, sophomore Melissa Smith fed a pass to junior Tess Follman that Follman blasted past the Warriors' goalkeeper for the 1-0 advantage.

Five minutes later, sophomore Catherine Mammoser scored an unassisted goal to move the Panthers ahead 2-0. Moments later, Smith found the back of the net for her fourth goal in just three games this year, and the route was on.

Junior Maggie Boehler connected on a shot at the 37-minute mark, while freshman Haley Russell scored her first collegiate goal just before half to bring the score to 5-0.

Lycoming found a little rhythm in its offense to start the second 45 minutes. Jordan Lazarich scored on a pass from Olivia Mendler that ended the shut out chances for Pitt-Bradford. With almost 67 minutes ticked away, Kaitlyn Gulotta set up for a penalty kick against Redfern. Redfern appeared to have made the save, but the ball rolled off her chest and across the line to give the Warriors two on the board.

Senior, and co-captain, Casey Schimpf then found the net for her first goal of the year on an unassisted shot. With the score 6-2 and time running thin, Smith sent a pass to freshman Kaitlyn Williams which turned into a shot that slipped past the keeper. The tally gave Williams her first goal in a Panther uniform and a big win for Pitt-Bradford.

The Panthers are off to a hot start in 2014 with big wins in their first three contests. Pitt-Bradford returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 10, as it travels to face Juniata in Huntingdon, Pa. First touch is set for 4 p.m.
