Lady Panthers claw past Juniata 2-1 in extra time

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Pitt-Bradford women's soccer team inched its way past the Juniata Eagles 2-1 in extra time on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore forward Melissa Smith found the net on an unassisted goal in the 102nd minute to lift the Panthers to victory.

Pitt-Bradford (4-0) kept its perfect record intact by way of a nail biter that almost saw the squad drop its first game of the season. The Panthers registered just eight shots in the match, by far their lowest total of the year.

Freshman net minder Sarah Dailey continued her stellar run between the posts by allowing just one goal on 13 shots by Juniata (2-3). Dailey tallied a total of five saves in the contest.

Junior Maggie Boehler led the Panther attack with three shots on goal and also tallied the first one of the match on her own unassisted shot in the upper right 90 of the net. The marker came in the 22nd minute of action to give the Panthers the 1-0 edge.

Nine minutes later, Juniata's Lauren Liacouras notched her first goal of the year on a header that came off a pass from Emily Green. The equalizer remained the final tally in regulation as it would take extra time to decide this one.

The two squads continued to battle it out well into the extra period when Smith's latest goal, her fifth of the year, sealed the victory for the Panthers and made it four straight to start 2014.

Pitt-Bradford returns home to the Kessel Athletic Complex to face Buffalo State on Saturday, Sept. 13. First touch is set for 1 p.m.
