Smith’s tallies guide Panthers to AMCC Finals with 2-0 win

BRADFORD, Pa. – Sophomore forward Melissa Smith scored two first-half goals and the Pitt-Bradford women's soccer team defeated the D'Youville Spartans 2-0 to earn a trip to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Finals.

Pitt-Bradford (15-4, 8-1) controlled the tempo of the game from the opening touch, not allowing D'Youville (8-8-2, 4-5) a trip into their backfield until several minutes into the match. The Panthers went on to outshoot the Spartans 10-5.

Smith became the hero for Pitt-Bradford yet again with two goals that proved the difference in the match. Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Dailey notched her third consecutive shutout between the posts and seventh of the year. She needed just four saves to earn the win.

With nearly 19 minutes ticked away in the first half, Smith lined up for a corner kick on the bench side of the field. She sent a high, bending kick that the Spartans' keeper attempted to punch out of the box. The ball came off the side of the keeper's fist and landed in the net with Smith receiving credit for the goal.

Just over 10 minutes later, freshman Delany Houtz sent a bouncing pass toward Smith in the box. With her back to the goal, Smith took a blind shot over her head at the net. The shot caught the goalkeeper off guard and found its way into the net for the 2-0 advantage.

Smith finished the game with four shots, three on goal, and the two markers. Junior Maggie Boehler was close behind with three shots, two of which were on goal.

"I thought we did well to take care of business playing a pretty controlled game from start to finish," said head coach Mike Idland. "We're all happy to move on and shift our focus to winning the next game here on Saturday."

With the win, Pitt-Bradford hosts Penn State Behrend on Saturday, Nov. 8, for the AMCC Finals. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. at the Kessel Athletic Complex.
