Three Wrestlers Earn All-Conference Honors at AMCC Championships

Alfred, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford wrestling team traveled to Alfred State on Saturday to compete for individual honors as they wrestled in the AMCC Championships. Three of seven Panthers that wrestled at the Championship tournament earned All-Conference recognition as they placed 2nd in their weight classes.

DJ Slovick picked up his second All-Conference honor in as many seasons, as he took 2nd place at 165. Slovick won his opening match by pinfall at 1:31 and then earned a spot in the championship bout with a 10-5 victory by decision. In the final match, Slovick fell to Justin Smith of Alfred State by an 8-4 decision.

Colton Gietler was the next Panther to earn a podium spot as he also took 2nd, wrestling at 174. Gietler was dominant early, as he won his opening match by a 22-3 technical fall, and then won the semifinal by major decision with a 15-5 advantage. He was unable to keep the momentum in the final match, falling 5-0 to Brent Perry, again of Alfred State.

Finally, Freshman Gavin Thompson took 2nd place in the heavyweight class. Thompson was given an opening-round bye and then pinned his semifinal opponent at 7:00 to earn a position in the final bout. Thompson was unable to come away with the final victory, falling 6-1 to Nick Barrett of Alfred State.

Only one other Panther was able to pick up a win on the day. Wrestling at 149, Ray Worsen was able to win his first match of the event, pinning his opponent in 2:00. He was unable to earn a final position as he was pinned in the semifinal and then lost the consolation semifinal by a 4-3 decision.

The Panthers' season is not quite finished, as they will now spend the next few weeks preparing for NCAA Mideast Regional Qualifiers. The regional qualification meet will be held on Friday, March 1st, and Saturday, March 2nd at RIT's George H. Clark Gymnasium.
