Panthers Celebrate Seniors in Dual Against Penn State-Behrend

Bradford, PA. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's bowling team hosted Penn State-Behrend in a regular season finale dual match on Saturday. They also celebrated Senior Day, honoring two graduating players. They lost all three matches to the Lions, falling in two traditional games and one baker match.

Prior to the action, the Panthers took a few moments to recognize their graduating seniors. Sarah Newland has bowled 3 seasons for the Panthers. She has spent the majority of her time bowling in the 4th position, setting up the anchor bowler. Newland was a 2nd Team All-AMCC Selection in 2022-23. Ekaterina Wilson, who graduated in December, was also able to come back and be recognized. Wilson joined the team in 2019-20, and bowled 3 and 1/2 seasons with the Panthers.

The Panthers started the day with a career game from Brookelyn Garvey. They were unable to keep up with the Lions overall, falling 778-843 in the match. Brookelyn Garvey set a career-high for the Panthers, posting a score of 243 pins. Erin Wales was next for the Panthers at 145, while Sarah Newland and Olivia Shultz bowled a 138 and a 136 respectively.

Three Panthers improved their scores from the first matchup in game 2, but Pitt-Bradford still fell 767-843. Newland led the way at 185, while Wales was behind her at 171. Alexis Whitfield also improved her score, posting a 151 in the game.

In the final match of the day, the teams competed in a Baker match decided by total pinfall over 5 games. The Panthers started strong, winning game one 177-148. The Lions struck back in game two, winning 149-128 to cut the Panther pin lead to 8. The Panthers fell behind with a 178-122 loss in the third game but trimmed the deficit to 39 with a 144-135 win in the 4th. The Panthers needed a strong game 5 to complete the comeback, but it was the Lions who had the best game, winning 218-145 to secure the win.

The Panthers will be back in action next weekend when they bowl in the AMCC Championship Tournament. In the AMCC Round Robin, the Panthers went 9-11 and secured the #6 seed in the tournament due to a tiebreaker over Pitt-Greensburg. In the first round on Friday, they will take on #3 seed Alvernia.
