Panthers Finish 2nd at Unicorn Invitation

Pittsburgh, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's bowling team was back in action after a two-week hiatus, competing in the Unicorn Invitational, hosted by LaRoche. Bowling in 5 Baker matches, The Panthers went 4-1 at the event to secure a 2nd place finish.

Pitt-Bradford got off to a slow start, as they took on Saint Vincent in the opening match. The Panthers won game one 164-125, but could not keep momentum for long, losing game two 151-190. The Bearcats built a large lead over the next two games, as the Panthers lost game three 128-146 and game four 152-232. They were able to rally and win game 5 156-155, but the deficit was too large, falling in the match as a whole 751-848.

Match two saw the Panthers take on Penn State-Behrend, and hold off a late rally to win 797-780. Pitt-Bradford fell behind with a 153-161 loss in the opener but erased the deficit and went ahead with a 162-151 win in the second. They extended their lead to 52 with a 176-159 win in game three and a 159-127 win in the fourth. Penn State Behrend was able to rally in the 5th, but the 147-182 loss was not enough to erase the Panther lead.

The Panthers built some momentum in game three, as they dominated LaRoche to the tune of a 728-554 victory. They won all five games of the match, with four of the wins coming by at least 36 pins. The Panthers took the first game 121-85, the second 138-92, the third 161-114, the fourth 141-135 and the final 167-128.

In the fourth match of the event, the Panthers were able to overcome an early deficit with a strong finish to defeat Penn State-Altoona 807-759. They lost game one 133-152 and still trailed by two pins after a 156-139 win in game two. The deficit grew to 14 after they lost the third game 133-145, but was erased when the Panthers won the fourth 176-156. The Panthers put the match away with their best game of the day, winning the 5th 209-166 to secure the victory. 

To close the event, the Panthers faced Pitt-Greensburg and posted their best score of the day with an 862-822 win. The Panthers lost a tight game one 154-160 but built an 88-pin lead with a 191-146 win in the second game and an 184-135 win in the third. The Panthers were able to withstand a Bobcat explosion in the fourth as they maintained their lead despite a 183-207 pin loss. They were then able to hold off the Bobcats despite a 150-174 loss in the 5th.

The Panthers will have one final tune-up this season before the AMCC Championship tournament. They will host Penn State-Behrend in a dual match on Saturday, March 16th. The AMCC Championship tournament begins on March 22nd, where they will compete from the #6 seed.
