Panthers Struggle to Find Range, Fall to Hawks

Panthers Struggle to Find Range, Fall to Hawks

Hamburg, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team took on the Hilbert Hawks on Wednesday evening, falling 46-64.

The Panthers fell behind 4-0 at the start of the game but quickly tied the score with back-to-back layups from McKenna Kelly and Paige Gratto. The hosts quickly responded with 5 straight of their own, but the Panthers battled back again with consecutive layups from Abigail Goss and Kelly. Hilbert jumped back ahead 13-8, but the Panthers rallied one final time as Gratto made a three before Yasmine Abu-Aiadeh hit a layup to tie the game at 13. The Panthers looked to be headed to the 2nd quarter tied up, but Hilbert made a buzzer-beating three to go ahead 16-13 heading to the second.

Avery Benzel started the 2nd quarter with a pair of free throws, which was matched by a Hilbert layup. The start of the quarter was followed by a dry stretch for both teams that ended with 4:37 to go on an Abu-Aiadeh layup. The Hawks called a timeout after the basket and responded, scoring the next 7 points while keeping the Panthers off the board for nearly the rest of the quarter. Goss was able to make a layup in the final seconds of the half to send the game to the break with the Panthers trailing by 6.

Goss started the second half scoring with a layup, but the Hawks went on to score 10 of the next 14 points to push their advantage to double digits and force a Pitt-Bradford timeout. Gratto made a pair of layups over the final 4 minutes of the period, while the Hawks continued their rally, scoring 12 points of their own in the stretch to take an 18-point lead into the 4th.

In the final stanza, Pitt-Bradford was not able to cut into the lead early, as the Hawks scored the first 4 points of the quarter, and were then able to respond to each Pitt-Bradford basket, limiting the Panthers' momentum.  The Panthers were able to put together a 7-0 run with 5 minutes left in the game, as Gratto made her second three of the game and Abu-Aiadeh added four straight from the line. Aiadeh added two more free throws and Benzel made a layup, but the Hawks were able to put the game away from the free throw line.

Paige Gratto scored a game-high 18 points, while also grabbing 8 rebounds and recording 5 steals. Yasmine Abu-Aiadeh was the only other Panther to reach double figures, as she scored 11 points. Abigail Goss finished with 6 points and 8 rebounds, while Raquel Sewell blocked 3 shots.

The loss drops Pitt-Bradford to 4-3 on the season with a 1-2 record in AMCC play. They will return to KOA Arena for their next game, as they will host LaRoche in their final game before the holiday break. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
