Panthers Season Comes to a Close Against Lions

Panthers Season Comes to a Close Against Lions

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team had its season come to a close on Saturday as they fell to Penn State-Altoona 69-48.

Before the game, the Panthers took a few moments to celebrate three graduating players, Ashley Hall, Daizjah Brown and Lauryn Moore. Hall and Brown have both been with the team since 2019, while Moore joined last season.

The Panthers were able to start the scoring, as Ashley Hall made a midrange jumper on a second-chance opportunity. Their lead did not last long, as a minute later the Lions tied the game with a jumper and then took the lead with a three on the next possession. Abigail Goss made a layup to get the Panthers to within one, but her basket was followed by an 8-0 run from the Lions which put them up 13-4. Goss made another layup to slow the Lion run and Trinity Lockwood-Morris made a jumper to get the lead back into single digits with 2:14 left. The Panthers were unable to score in the final two minutes, while their opponents added 8 more unanswered to end the first quarter with Pitt-Bradford down 26-9.

The Panthers were able to cut into the lead in the 2nd quarter, outscoring the guests 18-10 in the period. They got off to a strong start, as Goss converted a three-point play on the first possession of the quarter. The Lions scored the next four points, but the Panthers were able to lock down defensively after the second basket, keeping Penn State-Altoona off the board for a five-minute stretch. In that span, Lockwood-Morris, McKenna Kelly, and Lauryn Moore all made jumpers to cut the lead back to 11. Lockwood-Morris answered a Lion free throw with another basket inside before Moore made another jumper and pair of free throws to keep the deficit to 9. In the final seconds of the half, Lockwood-Morris made a basket to answer a Penn State-Altoona layup, sending the game to halftime with the Panthers trailing 36-27.

After the break, the Panthers continued their push, getting the Lion advantage down to just 5 points after three minutes of play. Kelly started the half with a lay-up and then quickly responded to a Penn State-Altoona basket with a short jumper. Lockwood Morris was able to continue the rally with another short jumper, but her basket was followed by a four-minute dry spell that allowed the Lions to push their lead back to double digits. Daizjah Brown ended the rally with a pair of free throws and Ashley Hall added another jumper, but the Panthers were unable to score any further, ending the third down 16.

Lockwood-Morris began the 4th with a layup on a feed from Alea Ackerman, but the Panthers were unable to string any rallies together, as the Lions continued to add to their lead throughout the quarter. With 5 minutes to go, the Lions were forced to take a timeout after Ackerman made a three, and Avery Benzel added a layup on the fast break on a turnover. The timeout broke any momentum the Panthers may have had, as they were limited to just an Ashley Hall jump shot over the final 4:54 of play.

Trinity Lockwood-Morris led the Panthers with 15 points in just 24 minutes of action. She made 7-11 from the field and also led the Panthers with 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Abigail Goss finished with 8 points but was limited to just 3 second-half minutes after battling foul trouble.

In their final collegiate games, Hall, Brown, and Moore all started the game. Hall scored 6 points and added 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Moore also scored 6 points and had 2 rebounds. Brown finished with two points and grabbed 6 rebounds.

The Panthers finish their season 3-21 with a 1-13 record in AMCC play.
