Panthers Erase 13-Point Deficit for 2nd Straight Win

DuBois, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team picked up its second straight victory on Saturday as they defeated Penn State-Dubois 58-54.

A late first-quarter rally allowed the hosts to build a 13-point lead in the middle of the second period, but the Panthers held the Lions to 20 second-half points to earn the win. Ashley Hall got the Panthers off the mark with a three-pointer after two minutes of play. An Avery Benzel three put the Panthers up 8-5 but the hosts responded with two consecutive long balls of their own to take the lead. Abigail Goss kept the Panthers within a possession with a putback layup, but Penn State-DuBois jumped ahead outscoring the Panthers  11-3 over the last 4 minutes of the first to take a 22-13 lead into the second quarter. 

Benzel made a basket inside to start the second quarter, but it was followed by a 5-minute scoreless streak that saw the Lions increase their lead to 13 points. Hall ended the scoreless run with a three and Katie Woolson hit a midrange jumper to get the deficit into single digits. In the final minute of the half, Lauryn Moore hit a pair of jump shots to send the game to halftime with the Panthers trailing 30-34. 

After the break, the Panthers locked down on defense, allowing the Lions only 6 points in the third quarter. Neither team was able to score in the first 3 and a half minutes of the 3rd until McKenna Kelly made a jump shot. Following a few defensive stops, Benzel made another three-pointer to give Pitt-Bradford their first lead since the first. The Panthers were once again productive in the final minute of the quarter, outscoring the Lions 5-1 in the last 60 seconds to go to the final period leading 43-40. Summer Anderson and Trinity Lockwood-Morris each made a field goal in the stretch, while Moore added a free throw.

The Panthers locked down on defense again to start the final quarter, keeping the Lions scoreless for 3 minutes. Goss and Anderson each made jumpers in the stretch. with 5 minutes to go, Hall made another three to give the Panthers an 8-point lead, their largest of the game. The Lions were not done yet, as they scored 7 straight to cut the lead to 1 point with just over 2 minutes remaining. Goss made a jumper on a Benzel pass to end the scoreless streak and after a Lion turnover, Daizjah Brown made a final basket to put the game out of reach. 

Avery Benzel led the Panthers with 11 points she also added 5 assists and 3 rebounds. Abigail Goss also reached double figures, scoring 10 points on 4-8 shooting. She grabbed 5 rebounds. Ashley Hall scored 9 points and collected a team-high 10 rebounds. 

The win moves the Panthers to 2-7 on the season. They will return to action after the holidays to close out their non-conference schedule with an away contest at Marywood on Thursday, December 29th. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:0 p.m.
