The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team (15-7, 11-4) lost a 77-75 last second heartbreaker at D'Youville (10-13, 7-9) on Wednesday night.
Ali Cochrane hit a three-point jumper from way beyond the arc with less than a second on the clock to give the Spartans the slim victory.
Brittany Watts gave the Panthers a 75-74 lead when she completed the three-point play with 13 seconds left. However, the Spartans last second heartbreaker spoiled the Panther's comeback.
Abby Brate led the Panther's offense with 21 points while adding three steals on the defensive end. Ali Rinfrette followed with a double-double, posting 20 points and 14 rebounds while Darien Lantz rounded out the Pitt-Bradford scorers in double figures with 14 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
Jean-Ann Korona led the Spartans with a double-double, posting an mpressive 23 points and 18 rebounds while Colleen Wirth followed with 14 points and Alexis Smith chipped in with 12 points in the victory.
The Panthers overcame cold shooting all night and still nearly pulled off the victory despite shooting just 29.2-percent from the floor and 19.5-percent from beyond the arc. D'Youville took advantage of the opportunities from three-point land, shooting 52.9-percent from outside the perimeter. The Panthers outrebounded the Spartans 70-41 in the loss.
Pitt-Bradford once again had to overcome a sluggish start as they trailed 21-9 after the first quarter.
The Panthers got back on track in the second quarter, outscoring D'Youville 19-14 to cut the deficit to 35-28 at the half.
D'Youville answered right back with a strong third quarter, outscoring the Panthers 26-18. The Spartans lead eventually reached 18 with just 7:26 left in the game.
Despite the large deficit the Panthers never gave in, dominating the majority of the fourth quarter and eventually capturing a 75-74 lead when Watts ripped down and offensive board and went right back up with it, scoring the bucket and then adding the foul shot to five the Panthers the lead with 13 seconds left.
Cochrane, who's nine points all came off of three-point baskets, hit the game-winner with less than one second left to give D'Youville the victory.
The Panthers continue AMCC play Saturday afternoon as they host LaRoche at 4 p.m. in the KOA Arena.
The Pitt-Bradford athletic department will be raising awareness for ovarian cancer during Saturday's doubleheader. The department will donate the gate fee to the Evans-Krivak Gynecological Cancer Research Foundation. Free awareness ribbons will also be handed out at the door.
