UPB falls to Kenyon, beats Wooster

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Pitt-Bradford softball team split a doubleheader with Kenyon and Wooster Thursday.

The Panthers took on Kenyon in game one and suffered an 8-0 loss.

Pitt-Bradford (4-4) found themselves in a jam in the bottom of the third as Kenyon (12-3) loaded the bases on three straight hits. Kenyon would get one run on a double play turned by senior Megan Hillard (Bradford/Bradford) and another one on a line drive to right field making the score 2-0.

With two outs in the inning, Kenyon loaded the bases again after two straight errors by the Panthers and took advantage on a bases clearing double by Amanda Coyle. Kenyon wasn't done yet as they put up two more in the inning and came away with a seven run third.

The Panthers settled in defensively after a pitching change to sophomore Ashley Bowes (Horsehead, N.Y./Horsehead) however, Pitt-Bradford could not get the bats working as they struggled to put together any kind of offense.

The game came to a standstill after the third inning with both teams putting on notable pitching performances. Kenyon's Maddy Stark posted 12 strikeouts in six innings and Bowes only surrendered four hits in her outing.

Kenyon put away the Panthers as they added one more run in the bottom of the sixth for the 8-0 margin of victory.

Pitt-Bradford took on the Wooster Fighting Scots in game two of its doubleheader and came away with comeback victory, 6-4.

The Panthers were led by Bri Stenta who went 3-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Wooster (6-2) got on the board in the first inning after an RBI single up the middle to give them an early 1-0 lead.

After two scoreless innings, the Panthers came back to tie the game up with an RBI by senior Ang Comilla (Bradford/Bradford) that scored senior Heidi Lucke (Canton, MI/Canton).

Pitt-Bradford went on to take the lead in the top of the sixth after Bri Stenta led off the inning with a line drive to left field and was eventually drove in by Comilla for her second RBI of the day.

With their backs against the wall the Fighting Scots took advantage of an error by the Panthers and tied the game back up in the bottom of the sixth.

Pitt-Bradford would bust the game wide open in the top of the seventh after a series of hits led to a Stenta bases loaded double that scored three runners followed by junior Leann Bell's (Lance/West Branch) single that brought home Stenta.

The Panthers held off Wooster in its final at bats and came away with the 6-2 victory.

"Great comeback against Wooster," said Pitt-Bradford coach Tina Phillips.

"Bri's hit was clutch and the top of the order getting on base. Cassidy did a nice job pitching. The first game was a struggle. We didn't have many good at-bats and struggled on defense, but that's what we are here to work on. We just need to keep working on getting better."

The Panthers will be back in action at 9 a.m. Friday, March 13 as they take on Ohio Wesleyan.
