Young Finishes 3rd in 400 IM as Panthers Remain in 7th Place

Webster, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's swimming team competed on the third day of competition at the Allegheny Empire Championships on Friday night. The Panthers remained in 7th place but were able to bring their point total to 226 after four Panthers qualified for finals and two relays completed the 400-yard medley relay.

The first event of the night was the 400-yard individual medley. Three Panthers entered the event, and all three were able to earn a spot in the finals. Conany Young led the group, as he was able to qualify with the third-best time. Duncan Young just missed out on the top flight, finishing in 11th. Nathan Ryan secured the final spot in the finals, as he finished the prelims in 20th place.

In the Finals, Conan Young shaved 2 seconds off of his preliminary time and finished in 3rd place with a time of 4:11.30. Young's time not only put him in 3rd but was the 2nd best of all AMCC swimmers, earning him a spot on as an all-conference performer in the event. Duncan Young swam in the 2nd heat of the finals and was able to win a tight race, picking up an 11th-place finish with a time of 4:27.43. He won the race by just .06 seconds. Nathan Ryan was able to improve his final position by 1 spot as his time of 4:49.31 put him in 19th.

Sam Wright was the only other Panther to qualify for a finals spot, as he finished the 100-yard backstroke preliminary race with the 7th-best time at 54.62 seconds. In the finals, Wright was unable to improve on his time, finishing the race in 55.11 seconds, putting him in 8th place.

Pitt-Bradford was able to field two teams in the session-closing 400-yard medley relay, both completing the races to add 40 points to the Panther total. The Panthers' top team of Wright, Logan Giles, Young, and Young finished in 7th place with a time of 3:43.31. Wright started the race with a 55.40-second split in the backstroke leg and was followed by Giles in the breaststroke, who completed his portion in 1:03.69. Conan Young posted a time of 53.83 seconds in the butterfly leg, and Duncan Young closed with a 50.39-second freestyle lap. The Panthers' second team of Owen Fitzsimmons, Eric Reynolds, Nathan Ryan, and Brody Barto finished 17th with a time of 4:02.96.

The Panthers will be in action for one more day, as the championship meet will come to an end tomorrow. Conan Young will look to retain his title in the 1650-yard freestyle before the rest of the Panthers compete in the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard freestyle relay. The Prelims will begin at 10:00 a.m., with finals beginning at 5:00 p.m.
