Conan Young Sets Pool Record as Panthers Fall to Lions on Senior Day

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's swimming team took on the Penn State-Altoona Lions in their final home action of the season. Despite a record-setting performance from Conan Young, the Panthers fell to the Lions 127-67.

Prior to the start of the action, the Panthers took a few moments to recognize their two graduating seniors. Owen Fitzsimmons and Matt Gullotti are prepared to graduate this spring and are completing their final season with the program. Fitzsimmons has swam for the Panthers for 4 seasons, competing in middle-distance and long-distance freestyle events, along with relays. Gullotti has been with the program for three seasons. He has competed in breaststroke and freestyle events.

After the event opening relays, sophomore Conan Young shattered the pool record in the long-distance 1650-yard freestyle. Young easily won the race by more than 30 seconds, but set the new mark at 16:59.53. The previous record was 17:30.0 set by a Penn State-Behrend swimmer in 2018. along with setting the record in the mile, Young also finished second in the 100-yard butterfly. He finished with a time of 58.44 seconds, 2.5 seconds off the winning pace. 

The Panthers were only able to win one other race, as Conan's brother Duncan Young won the 200-yard freestyle. He completed the race in 1:55.76, 3.5 seconds ahead of the field. Duncan also added a 3rd place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, where his time of 52.15 seconds was 1.57 seconds behind the winner. 

Sam Wright, Eric Reynolds, and Brody Barto all took home 2nd place finishes on the day as well. Wright was runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke (59.27) Barto was 2nd in the 500-yard freestyle (5:46.57) and Reynolds won a tight race to second in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in 2:34.34, less than a second ahead of the 3rd and 4th place finishers. 

The Panthers finished the medley relay in 3rd and had 2 relays finish the freestyle, with Barto, Young, Young, and Wright taking 3rd and Logan Giles, Aiden Minch-Hick, Gullotti and Camden Tetenov finishing 5th. 

The Panthers record falls to 3-5 in dual meets. They will close their regular season next weekend when they travel to Washington & Jefferson for a dual meet.
