Men's and Women's Swim Teams Compete in Day 1 of Allegheny Empire Swimming and Diving Championships

Webster, N.Y. -- 6 swimmers for the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's and women's swim teams participated in the first day inaugural Allegheny Empire Swimming and Diving Championship on Wednesday. All 6 swimmers participated in both the preliminary rounds and the finals.

  • Carey Behm represented the Panthers in the men's 500-yard freestyle. Behm qualified for the finals with a time of 5:01.17, and then took 18th in the event with a finals time of 5:01.36. This was a season-best time for Behm, shaving 11 seconds off his previous season-best. 
  • Christopher Troll swam in the men's 200-yard individual medley. He took 22nd place with a time of 2:15.73 in the finals. This was also a season-best time for Troll in the event. 
  • Adriana Gallas finished in 24th in the women's 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:40.57. Gallas had swum the event twice in her freshmen campaign before the championship meet and took 23 seconds off her personal best. 
  • Lauryn Kahle swam in the 50-yard freestyle sprint and finished in 21st. Her time was 29.98 seconds.
  • Finally, the men's 2000 yard medley relay team finished in 8th place with a time of 1:51.25.

The joint championship format allows for teams to compete for the overall meet championship, as well as for their own conference. For the overall championship, the men's team is currently in 8th place with 54 points. They are also in 4th in the AMCC standings with 36 points. The women picked up 5 points and are in 10th in the overall standings and 6th in the AMCC standings. The Panthers will be back in action tomorrow for the second day of the competition. There will be 4 swimming events contested both for the men's team and the women's team. The events will be the 400-yard individual medley, the 100-yard butterfly, the 200-yard freestyle and the 400-yard medley relay. The preliminary trials will begin at 10:00 a.m., with the finals session beginning at 6:00 p.m.
