Panthers Hold Off Celtics for First Win of Season

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's soccer team earned its first win of the season on Saturday, as they defeated Carlow 2-1.

The Panthers got off to a blistering start as they took the lead after just over two minutes of action. Devin Stowe opened the scoring, as after receiving a pass from Will Smith he unleashed a driven shot from 25 yards away from goal. The shot perfectly found the top right corner of the net to put Pitt-Bradford in front. The strike was Stowe's 4th of the year, and his first from open play this season.

Pitt-Bradford nearly doubled their lead in the 22nd minute. after a corner kick, Bailee Verdill took a shot that found the far post, and on the resulting rebound, Evan Baldwin attempted to direct a shot to goal but found the other post to keep the score 1-0. 15 minutes later, the Panthers were able to double their tally. Spencer Sklar dribbled into the box from the left wing and laid a pass off to Bailee Verdill. Verdill collected the ball and hit a low shot into the side netting to put Pitt-Bradford up 2-0. It was Verdill's second goal in as many games.

After the break, the Celtics pressed the Panthers' defense and were able to strike in the 59th minute. After a foul on the right wing, the Panthers were unable to properly clear the resulting free kick, as their effort curled into the net for an own goal.

Pitt-Bradford looked to counter and add to their lead, but could not find the net. Devin Stowe hit the crossbar in the 68th, and then the Panthers had a pair of penalty shouts that were ruled to have occurred just outside the box. Unfortunately, the Panthers could not take advantage of the two free kicks. Brady Hathaway nearly scored the Panthers' third goal in the 84th minute, but as his effort headed to the far post, it was parried away by a diving Carlow keeper.

Devin Stowe finished the game with a goal, and 6 shots, including 4 on target. He also picked up a pair of cards and will miss the next game. Bailee Verdill also scored, putting one shot on goal out of 3 attempts. Evan Schmidt made 1 save in the game, as he earned his 2nd career win.

The Panthers are now 1-8-1 on the season, with a 1-2 record in AMCC play. They will be back in action on Wednesday, October 4th, as they travel to Penn State-Behrend for another AMCC matchup.
