Panthers Unable to Maintain Quick Start, Fall to Saxons

Salamanca, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's soccer team played their first home contest on Wednesday night, falling to Alfred 6-1.

The Panthers jumped out to a quick lead in the 4th minute, scoring their first goal from open play this season. Bailee Verdill started the transition from defense to attack for the Panthers, intercepting a pass inside his own half and finding classmate Brady Hathaway in the center of the pitch. Hathaway turned and attempted to put Gladwin Timothy in behind the defense with a through ball. Timothy streaked toward goal but was beaten to the ball by the Alfred keeper. The Saxon netminder attempted to clear the ball, but hit Timothy with his clearance, leaving an open net for the Panther winger. Timothy raced to the ball and slid a shot into the open net to put the Panthers ahead 1-0.

Jared Scarlett kept the Panthers in the lead with two quick saves after the goal but was unable to hold the clean sheet for long, as a Panther turnover on the back line led to an Alfred Goal in the 13th minute. Five minutes later, The Panthers had a golden opportunity to retake the lead, but could not take advantage. Using a counterattack, the Panthers were able to send a through ball to Conner Rudsell down the left wing. Rudsell was able to send a low cross into the box, where Verdill ran onto the pass, but lifted his shot over the target for a goal kick. The visitors found a gap in the Panther defense and took the lead in the 25th. The Panthers lost control of the ball after the restart, and the Saxons quickly attacked and scored their second goal in less than a minute to go ahead 3-1, a lead that they would hold into the break.

Following the break, the teams exchanged shots on goal before the Saxons added to their lead with a headed goal in the 60th minute. The visitors scored a 5th goal in the 64th minute on a curling shot from outside the box and pushed their lead to 6-1 with an 80th-minute strike. The Saxons continued pressing in the final five minutes of the match, but Scarlett was able to make 3 more saves to keep the deficit at 5.

Gladwin Timothy scored the lone goal for the Panthers, opening his collegiate account with the 4th-minute goal. He finished with two total shots, putting both of them on target. Bailee Verdill also had two shots, forcing a save on one of them. Devin Stowe had the other shot for the Panthers. Jared Scarlett made 10 saves in the Panther net.

The Panthers fall to 0-3 with the loss. They will be back on the road this weekend as they travel to Thiel for a non-conference tilt. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
