Panthers Season Ends After Loss to Hilbert

Panthers Season Ends After Loss to Hilbert

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's basketball team had its season come to a sudden end on Wednesday as they fell 105-98 to Hilbert despite a 39 point performance from Isaiah Archie.

  • The Panthers got off to an immediate start as Nathan Schneider made a layup off the tip and Archie followed it with one of his own on the next possession. The Panthers quickly build momentum, getting out to an early 9 point lead behind eleven more from Isaiah Archie, and an additional layup from Greg Archie. The Panthers pushed their advantage to 12 points after Trey Oyler and Schneider made threes around a Hilbert jump shot. Their run continued over the following two minutes as Schneider converted a three-point play and added another long ball, while another Isaiah Archie layup gave the Panthers a 16 point edge with 11:11 to go in the first.
  • Unfortunately, the Panthers' early success was followed by a Hilbert run that saw the Hawks erase the lead and tie the game at 34 in less than four minutes. The teams traded baskets for the next three minutes before the Panthers were able to put together a 14-4 run in four minutes. Gus Napoleon got the run started with a corner three and Schneider put the Panthers up 5 with a pull-up jumper. The Panthers responded two a Hilbert layup and a pair of free throws with Isaiah Archie and Napoleon threes before a putback layup and free throw from Caden Beldin gave the Panthers a 10 point lead with a minute remaining in the 1st. The visitors were able to cut into the lead before the break, as they scored 5 unanswered to send the game to halftime with Pitt-Bradford leading 51-46.
  • The Panthers struggled to get restarted after the break, as the Hawks scored 7 straight over the first two minutes to force a Pitt-Bradford timeout. Schneider ended the rally with a three-point play coming out of the timeout. The teams exchanged the lead seven times over the next three minutes before the Hawks scored 6 straight to build another 5-point lead. An Isaiah Archie free throw and Trey Oyler three cut the lead back to one. The Panthers hit six free throws in a row in two minutes to catch the Hawks and take a 78-77 lead with 10 minutes remaining.
  • The lead began to exchange hands once again over the following five minutes, as another Isaiah Archie layup tied the game at 88. The Panther offense began to slow after the basket, as the Hawks outscored Pitt0Bradford 9-2 over the next three minutes to open up a seven-point edge. Over the final two minutes, the Panthers were only able to get the lead back to five points as the Hawks were successful in putting the game away from the free-throw line.

Isaiah Archie put in a dominant performance despite the loss. He scored 39 points on 13-16 shooting. He also made 1-2 from three and 12-15 from the free-throw line. He also added 5 assists. Nathan Schneider recorded another double-double, scoring 24 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Trey Oyler added 13 points for the Panthers. He made all three of his long ball attempts and was 4-4 from the charity stripe.

With the loss, the Panthers finish the season 9-16 with a 4-12 record in conference play. They can only finish the season in 7th place, leaving them just out of the postseason regardless of the final round of results in the AMCC this weekend.
