Panthers Drop Home Opener to Juniata 92-82

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh men's basketball team picked up its first loss of the season as it fell 92-82 to Juniata on Tuesday night.

  • The Panthers started on the right foot as Nathan Schneider made a putback layup on the opening possession of the game. The momentum did not stay with the Panthers for long, as the visiting Eagles quickly scored 10 straight in just over 2 minutes to force Pitt-Bradford into a time out. Schneider kept the Panthers within shouting distance over the opening 10 minutes, scoring or assisting on all but two of the Panthers' early baskets.
  • An old-fashioned three-point play from Schneider saw the Panthers get the Juniata advantage to just 6 points, but the Eagles outscored the Panthers 19-10 over the final 9 minutes of the half to go into the break with a 15 point lead.
  • After halftime, the visitors quickly increased their lead to 20 with 17:40 to go. A Gavyn Mason pull-up jumper at 16:37 started a Panther run that saw Pitt-Bradford whittle the lead down to 11 points with 11:24 left in the game. Schneider led the comeback effort, scoring 8 points in the 5-minute span.
  • Following a Juniata run that saw them extend their lead back to 14 points, the Panthers outscored the Eagles 10-3 over a two and a half minute span to cut the lead to just 7 points. Isaiah Archie started the run with a putback layup and then converted a three-point play to bookend it. A pair of Schneider free throws got the Panthers to within six points with just over 2 minutes to go, but the Eagles made 9 of 11 free throws down the stretch to hold off the Panther charge.

Nathan Schneider paced the Panthers with 26 points. he shot 7 of 15 from the field and made 12-16 from the free-throw line. He also had 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Greg Archie set a season-high with 18 points on 7 of 11 from the field. Isaiah Archie recorded his first career double-double, finishing the game with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Dylan Meyer also chipped in on the Panther effort, scoring 7 points, including a big second-half three-pointer, and grabbing 7 rebounds.

The loss moves the Panthers to 2-1 on the season. They will head back on the road this Friday for a non-conference matchup with Keuka. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
