A native of Latrobe, PA, Bruce was a four-year starter on the men’s basketball team from 1987 to 1991. Bruce earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business management from Pitt-Bradford in 1991.
Bruce proved to be a team leader even as a freshman and was a strong player who ran the floor well. Bruce was selected as a team captain during his junior and senior years and is best known as a clutch shooter, solid rebounder and a great foul shooter.
The 6-foot-6-inch forward is eighth on the Pitt-Bradford men’s career scoring list with 1,336 points. Bruce is also third in career free throws made with 410, ranks fourth in career free throw percentage at .813 and is tied for the best single-game free throw shooting mark with a pair of 12-for-12 performances. He also set a Pitt-Bradford record with 27 consecutively made free throws and led the entire NAIA District 18 in free throw percentage (84.9) in his freshman season (1987-88). He averaged 15.1 points per game and was named to the NAIA District 18 First Team in 1989-90, and then averaged 14.2 points per game to once again earn District 18 First Team honors in 1990-91.
Lorenzo Newsome ’84
A native of Oxon Hill, MD, Lorenzo played men’s basketball from 1980 to 1984. Lorenzo earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business management from Pitt-Bradford in 1984 and an MBA from Bowie State University in Maryland in 1988.
Lorenzo, a 6-foot-5-inch forward played with extreme confidence even as a freshman. His power driving to the basket was daunting for our opponents while his quickness to fill the lanes on the Panthers’ fast breaks was exceptional. He was a great leaper who could defend the opposing teams’ tallest players, but most surprising was his shooting touch from 20 feet.
Lorenzo wanted to and strived for improving all aspects of his game, which made him a pivotal asset to the success of the Panthers.
Lorenzo ranks ninth on the career scoring list with 1,291 points and ranks fourth with 692 rebounds. He scored 547 points (19.5 points per game) in his senior season and was voted to the NAIA District 18 Honorable Mention Team in 1983-84.
He is the president and chief investment officer at Xavier Capital Management LLC and is a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Washington, D.C. As an active member of the Pitt-Bradford Alumni Association and former board member, Lorenzo actively gives back to Pitt-Bradford, co-founding the David Blackmore Scholarship.
