Panthers Drop Finale at Oberlin Invite

Oberlin, Oh. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Volleyball team was right back in action Saturday morning after playing a pair of games at the Oberlin Invitational Friday Night. The Panthers took on Defiance, falling to the Yellow Jackets in straight sets.

The Panthers had a sluggish start dropping the opening set 8-25 loss. They followed that with an 18-25 loss in the second and closed the match with a 12-25 defeat in the third.

Despite scoring the opening point of the match, the Panthers were unable to get an early foothold. The match began with six straight side-outs, but it was the Yellow Jackets that were able to rally first, opening up a dominating lead with an 11-1 run. The Panthers were able to cut the lead back into single digits, scoring 4 of 6 points midway through the set, but Defiance closed with 9 in a row to take the set.

The second set saw the Panthers stay ahead of Defiance through 16 points. After a service error turned the serve over to Defiance, the Yellow Jackets once again went on a run, scoring 7 in a row. They pushed their lead to 10 at 13-23 before the Panthers put together a late rally. Kayla Maslowski recorded two service aces to go along with a pair of Defiance Errors to cut the lead back to 6. Emma King added a late kill before Defiance closed the set.

Pitt-Bradford was unable to jump ahead to start the third set but was able to stay within a few points of the Yellow Jackets early on using kills from Ryley Pago, Taylor King, and Morgan Frishkorn. With the Panthers trailing by two at 7-9, Defiance was able to score 16 of the final 21 points to bring the match to an end.

Bridget KAsting led the Panthers with 6 kills. She was one of the Panthers' most efficient hitters, committing just one hitting error to post a .333 hitting percentage. Emma King and Summer Anderson each added 3 kills. Chloe Bellis finished with 10 assists, while Kayla Masolwski led the defensive effort with 13 digs.

The Panthers are now 1-9 on the season. They will be back on the road for their next game, as they take on Fredonia on Tuesday night. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
