LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's volleyball program has been honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) with a Team Academic Excellence Award for the 2017-18 season, officials announced Monday.
"I am extremely proud of this team for the success it accomplishes on and off the court," Head Coach Tom Roof said. "We have a dedicated group of players who know what it takes to be successful, who want to win and who want to do well in the classroom. Earning this award is a big indication of how serious we take academics at the University of Pittsburgh."
Pitt-Bradford earned a cumulative GPA of 3.5260, with Elizabeth Johnson, Alayna Seggi and Katie Treat carrying perfect 4.0 marks through the full school year.
This is the second time in three years the Pitt-Bradford women's volleyball program has been honored by the AVCA.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
The Panthers are one of a record-breaking 973 teams nationwide honored by the AVCA in 2017-18.
173 total NCAA Division III women's volleyball teams earned qualifying GPAs this year.
This is the second time the 2017-18 Panthers' women's volleyball team has been honored for its success in the classroom, as Pitt-Bradford was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference women's volleyball Team Peak Performer for having the highest cumulative grade point average in the conference in its respective sport.
Pitt-Bradford is set to open up its 2018 season on August 31 with a pair of matches against RIT and Brockport in the Scranton Tournament.
