UPB Volleyball Edges Keuka in Five-Set Thriller

BRADFORD, Pa. - University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's volleyball coach, Tom Roof, never questioned his team's determination.

The Panther's proved their coach right, as their grit and will to win led them to a 3-2 (25-16, 22-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-12) victory over non-conference foe, Keuka College, in Pitt-Bradford's annual Dig Pink game on Wednesday night in the KOA Arena.

"I was impressed with our team's ability to bounce back after a tough fourth set to pick up a big non-conference victory," Roof said. "I've never questioned our will to win or our effort, it's just sometimes we don't execute. Tonight we made some mistakes and weren't at our best, but we executed when we needed to."

The Panthers used a balanced hitting attack to capture the victory over the Wolfpack. Alma Turpin led Pitt-Bradford with nine kills, seven digs, and three blocks. Kirsten Platz followed with seven kills and five blocks. Alexis Dhayer had nine kills and three blocks while Christina Rauh added 38 assists and four kills. Jenessa Ceprish chipped in with 18 digs and five service aces. Mandy Finch added 28 digs in the victory.

"Alma really gives us a legitimate threat at outside hitter and I thought she did an outstanding job tonight," Roof said. "Lexi (Dhayer) also played a great game tonight. This is her first year playing right side and she has done a terrific job for us."

Pitt-Bradford got out to a hot start, winning the first set 25-16. Keuka bounced right back with a 25-22 victory to even the match at 2-2. The Panthers took the third set and the Wolfpack forced a fifth set with a 25-23 victory in the fourth set.

Pitt-Bradford quickly went down 6-1 in the final set, but bounced back to capture a 15-12 victory, completing the 3-2 win.

"It was nice to get a non-conference victory tonight," Roof said. "Every game from here on out is important for us. We have three tough conference tests left and it starts Saturday."

The Panthers return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. at Franciscan in crucial AMCC matchup.
