Pitt-Bradford Volleyball Splits, Finishes Third at University of Scranton Tournament

SCRANTON, Pa. - The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford volleyball team earned a split for the second day in a row, finishing third at the University of Scranton Tournament.

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford volleyball team earned a split for the second day in a row, finishing third at the University of Scranton Tournament.

The Panthers fell 3-2 in five sets to the University of Scranton in the opener, and then topped Wentworth Institute of Technology, 3-1, in the third place match.

Christina Rauh was named to the all-tournament team for her performance in the opening weekend.

"I thought it was a good day," said Panthers head coach, Tom Roof. "We went five sets with a very strong Scranton team, and then came back in the afternoon with a big win over Wentworth."

Alma Turpin led the Panthers in the loss to Scranton, finishing with 15 kills and 11 digs. Mandy Finch added 19 digs, six kills and four assists, while Rauh finished with 37 assists, 30 digs and four kills. Alexis Dhayer chipped in with 12 digs and 10 kills, and Kirsten Platz added 11 kills in the loss.

Pitt-Bradford took the opening set 25-22, but the Royals answered with wins in the second and third sets to take a 2-1 advantage. The Panthers then forced a fifth set with a 25-23 victory in the fourth. The Royals took the fifth set 15-12, and ultimately won the match 3-2.

As they did yesterday, the Panthers avenged an earlier loss with a dominating win in the day's final match. Pitt-Bradford's relentless offensive attack proved to be too much for Wentworth, as the Panthers dominated three of the four sets to capture the victory.

Platz led the Panthers with 10 kills and two blocks while Turpin added 17 digs and seven kills. Finch, Jenessa Ceprish and Rauh finished with 17, 16 and 14 digs, respectively.

"I'm really impressed with our hitting right now," Roof said. "We are hitting from all angles and we're starting to get in a good flow. It was a great weekend for us. We were able to see what we need to work on."

The Panthers return to action Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Lycoming College Tournament.
