BRADFORD, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford tennis teams opened up their newly renovated courts at the Kessel Athletic Complex Friday hosting Penn State-Behrend.
The Panthers women's team opened up the courts in style, picking up a perfect win of 9-0, while the Pitt-Bradford men's team lost 9-0.
"The women played with smooth strokes and footwork that gave them a great win," Head Coach Susan Schenfield said. "Their solid all-around games gave trouble to their opponents."
"The men played aggressive games chocked full of shots but came up short," Schenfield said of her men's squad. "Jake and Matt came within points of upsetting their opponents. We will continue to work on consistency as our games are capable of producing big rewards."
For the two teams, Friday marked the first match action at the Kessel Athletic Complex this season, as work on the tennis courts that started in the spring finished just a few weeks ago.
"It was nice to finally play on our new courts," Schenfield said. "They will make our training more effective and our dual matches more efficient. These state-of-the-art courts are a tremendous asset to our players and all those in the area who enjoy playing tennis."
The Panthers' women's team put together a dominant showing in doubles action with Maya Bingaman and Jessica Jordan winning 8-1 in the No. 1 spot and Divya Guwalani and Elanie Roberts coming out on top 8-2 in the No. 2 spot.
Aaliyah Smith and Abbie Buerkle rounded out the sweep in doubles with an 8-3 win in the No. 3 spot.
In singles, Bingaman won in the top spot in three sets, and Roberts shut out her opponents, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 2 spot.
Buerkle and Jordan picked up their wins in the No. 3 and 4 spots, respectively, in dominant fashion.
Wells' match in the No. 5 spot went three sets but she dug deep and won, and the sweep was completed by Smith's 6-2, 6-2 win in the No. 6 spot.
On the men's side, the No. 2 doubles team of Jeffrey Kocjancic and Drew Patla put together a competitive match but fell, 8-4.
In singles, Jacob Volz worked a tight matchup in the top spot, but narrowly lost 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.
Matthew Dennis also was just points away from claiming a win but fell in the No. 2 spot.
Up next, both squads will head to Penn State-Altoona Saturday to continue AMCC action.
