Women's Tennis to Host Pitt-Greensburg in Season Opener

The Pitt-Bradford women's tennis team will open the 2016 season Saturday at home against Pitt-Greensburg.

For the Panthers, it's a tough test right out of the gate as the Bobcats lost in the AMCC finals a year ago and figure to be among the league's top teams again. In addition, Pitt-Bradford will be welcoming six new faces into the fold. Head coach Susan Schenfield will rely on returners Amy Thomas, Alexa Holleran and Kayla Kerner to lead the Panthers during the early season schedule as the newcomers adjust to the collegiate game.

"They have made strides during their playing time here at Pitt-Bradford," Schenfield said. "They know to move forward to a conference title will require focus and attention to detail on the court."

Maya Bingaman, Rebecca Jordan, Aaliya Smith, Ashley Stoltz, Katelyn Wells and Ava Young represent the newcomers, and all six will have a chance to compete for a starting role.

Pitt-Bradford has used the preseason to focus on doubles play in hopes of improving on one of last year's biggest weaknesses.

"Our players are working together to hone their skills, tactics and game plan to improve our last year's doubles record," Schenfield said. "We need to come out from the first ball and play with a ton of energy right from the beginning."

Pitt-Bradford missed the AMCC playoffs last year, the first time since the league moved to a team elimination format in 2012. The ninth-year head coach hopes the blend of experience and youthful enthusiasm will translate to better results in 2016.

"The success this season will be defined by the team's relentless attitude and unwillingness to surrender," Schenfield said. "With the returners' competitive spirit and the incoming players' energy, it will be an exciting season to watch how it all comes together."
