Women’s Tennis swings its way past Mount Aloysius, 8-1

BRADFORD, Pa. – The Pitt-Bradford women's tennis team swung its way past the visiting Mount Aloysius Mounties, 8-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Kessel Athletic Complex.

Pitt-Bradford (1-1) put together a strong showing in its 2014 home opener at the KAC. The Panthers jumped out to an early lead, 2-1, after doubles play and never looked back.

Freshman Alexa Holleran and freshman Alexandra Claherty suffered one of the few defeats in the top doubles flight, 8-4. Senior Shaina Reddinger and freshman Margaret Hansen teamed up to compete in the No. 2 doubles flight. The pair defeated their opponents 8-3, while junior Emily Fowkes and senior Jamie VanAlstine won the third flight 8-5.

Holleran defeated Johnson in the top singles flight 6-4, 6-3. Claherty then topped Loreal Housler 7-6, 6-4 in the No. 2 flight to keep the Panthers rolling. Reddinger claimed victory in the third flight 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 and Fowkes won the fourth flight 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. VanAlstine was victorious in the fifth flight 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

Finishing off the singles sweep of the Mounties was sophomore Amy Thomas. Thomas defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-0 to give Pitt-Bradford a big home opening victory.

The Panthers return to the court on Saturday, Sept. 13. Pitt-Bradford travels to face La Roche in Pittsburgh at 11 a.m.
