Panthers Stumble After Half, Fall to Bearcats

Panthers Stumble After Half, Fall to Bearcats

Latrobe, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's soccer team was back in action just over one week since their season opener. The Panthers battled early, but 4 2nd half goals from Saint Vincent led to a 5-0 loss.

The Panthers found their goal under attack early as Sadie Wood was forced into a save just 47 seconds into the game. The Panthers were able to settle in, keeping Saint Vincent from finding enough space for a shot for 10 minutes. In that span, McKenna Kelly was able to attempt a shot but saw it blocked by a defender. In the 22nd minute, the Bearcats were able to break the deadlock, as they scored on a 2-1 breakaway. Pitt-Bradford was able to keep Saint Vincent off the board for the remainder of the half but got some help as Wood made 1 save and saw 2 Bearcat shots hit the woodwork.

Things did not begin as well for the Panthers in the second half, as Saint Vincent was able to add two to their tally within 7 minutes. They scored the first within two minutes to double their advantage. After the goal, Carolelyn LaPrairie was able to force Saint Vincent into a save, but the momentum would not stay with Pitt-Bradford as the Bearcats were able to add the third goal on a rebound following a Wood save. They went on to add two more goals before the 65th minute, as the hosts used constant pressure to keep the ball in the Panther end.

The Panthers' best opportunity to score came in the 73rd minute. Kihara Gotshall was able to tackle the ball away from a Saint Vincent player near midfield. She dribbled upfield and sent a through ball behind the defense for Ainslie Gardner. Gardner was able to beat two defenders to the ball and dribbled around the onrushing keeper. Unfortunately, she lost her footing as she took a shot, and saw her effort cleared off the line by a Bearcat defender.

Gardner finished the game with a team-high 3 shots, putting 1 on target. Carolelyn LaPrairie and McKenna Kelly also had shots, with only LaPrairies forcing a save. Sadie Wood made 8 saves in the Panther net while she led a defensive line of Harle Ficek, Kihara Gotshall, Delaney Stowe, and Kimberly Goodwin that played all 90 minutes.

The Panthers fall to 0-2. They will get right back into action, as they will take on Bethany on Saturday, September 10th. The game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. kick-off.
