Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Women's team responded to a second-half goal from their opponents Alfred State, but two late Pioneer goals saw the Panthers fall 3-1.
The Panthers were able to take the game to the Pioneers early on, holding a slight advantage of possession, and finding the first opening for a shot in the game. Following the shot, the Panthers lost momentum, as the Pioneers controlled the majority of the ball, taking 5 shots as the Panthers were not able to get any more off in the first half. Senior Goalkeeper Emily Bethel made numerous important saves and plays in goal to keep the game scoreless through the first half.
After the break, the Pioneer pressure was able to break through the Panther defensive effort to open the scoring in the 54th minute. Despite their opponents breaking the deadlock, the Panthers were able to move into the attacking end, eventually winning a free-kick just outside the top left corner of the 18-yard box. From the direct kick, Delaney Stowe hit a left-footed shot that was able to curve into the top corner of the net to equal the score.
The momentum did not stay with the Panthers for long, as Alfred State was able to find a second goal 7 minutes later. After the visitors retook the lead, the Panthers poured more players forward but were unable to finish any of their chances. Eventually, the Pioneers were able to counter with a long ball behind the defense, which led to the final goal in the 85th minute.
The lone goal for the Panthers was Stowe's second of the year. Both have come off of set pieces, as her first was from the penalty spot. She also led the team in shots with three. Alexis Gibbons was able to take two shots in the match, with both winding up on target. Cassidy King, Carolelyn LaPrairie, and Kihara Gotshall all took shots at the Pioneer net as well. Emily Bethel finished the game with 7 saves.
The Panthers (0-5-1, 0-1-0 AMCC) will be back on the road for their next contest. They will play under the lights at Houghton on Tuesday, Sept. 21. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
