OBERLIN, Ohio – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's soccer team lost at Oberlin, 4-0, Friday evening in its season opener.
"It was a tough loss and not the way we wanted to start the season," Head Coach Melissa Lincoln said. "Oberlin is a good team, and we've got some good things going and some things to continue working on.
The Yeowomen gained the lead early as Sydnie Savarese finished off feeds from Izzy Rosenstein and Gwennie Gardiner 11 minutes into the game.
Oberlin later doubled its lead with a strike from the top of the box on the left side that found the upper-right corner.
The Panthers responded with a chance of their own as Katie Keller lined up a shot that was saved by the Oberlin keeper at the 18:38 mark.
At the 28:16 mark, Oberlin looked as though it would build on its lead. With a crowded box, the Yeowomen passed around a bouncing ball that ended up in front of the net, but Sarah Dailey dove to her right to catch the chance and neutralize the threat.
After a quiet first 18 minutes of the second half, Oberlin extended its lead on a counter strike from about 10 yards out.
Around the 68-minute mark, the Panthers had a pair of corner kicks, but the attempts were broken up by the Yeowomen defense.
In the closing minutes of the game, Dailey left the box and knocked the ball away on a breakaway attempt, and quickly retreated to her spot in goal. She then sent a strike from 25 yards out that looked destined for the upper-left corner wide as she tipped it away fully extended.
Oberlin's offensive attack would squeeze in one final goal in the 87th minute to bring the score to the eventual 4-0 final.
Dailey played all 90 minutes in goal for the Panthers, making eight saves.
Like Dailey, Delaney Houtz, Abbey Kalin, Meghan Stuck and Meghan Thomas played all 90 minutes on the pitch.
The Panthers earned six corner kick attempts and held Oberlin to just three.
Oberlin was whistled for nine fouls while the Panthers made just five.
Kaitlyn Williams rifled two shots and Keller accounted for the other to make up the Panthers' three shots.
The Panthers will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Case Western Reserve for a 6 p.m. kickoff tomorrow evening.
"I'm hoping we'll shake off tonight's loss and bounce back tomorrow with a better game against Case Western," Lincoln concluded.
