Women's Soccer Drops 1-0 Heartbreaker in Season Opener

SPRINGFIELD, Oh. - Despite a terrific defensive performance, the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker in overtime to Wittenberg University, Friday night at Capital University.

Sarah Dailey was outstanding in net, collecting seven saves for the Panthers in the overtime loss. However, Wittenberg's Emily Hawthorn sailed a header just over Dailey's head in the 99th minute to give the Tigers the victory.

"I thought we did very well to stifle play defensively throughout the game and in all parts of the field," said Pitt-Bradford head coach Mike Idland. "Sarah Dailey put on a world class performance in goal, and Bethany Carpenter was outstanding in her college debut at center back."

The Tigers' offense managed 15 shots, eight of which were on net, in the victory. Grace Dadzaa led the Pitt-Bradford offense with two shots, including one on net, while Abby Celesky chipped in with a shot on goal for the Panthers.

With the loss, Pitt-Bradford falls to 0-1 on the season while Wittenberg improves to 1-1.

"We obviously need to work to improve in the attack," Idland said. "I think we laid down a good foundation from which to build from tonight against a very good Wittenberg team."

The Panthers return to action Sunday afternoon at one against the tournament's host, Capital University.
