Panthers Fall Short in Home Trimeet

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford wrestling team hosted its second multiteam event in as many weeks on Saturday as they took on Thiel and St. John Fisher in the Pitt-Bradford tri-meet.

The Panthers took on Thiel in the second match of the day, falling 31-17 to the Tomcats. They followed that up with a tight 22-20 loss to St. John Fisher in the finale.

Ja'Shad Bumpers got the Panthers off on the right foot in the Thiel match, pinning his opponent in 4:56 to put the Panthers up 6-0. Thiel took control of the match after a Pitt-Bradford forfeit at 133, going ahead 16-6 on a major decision victory at 141 and a pair of close decision wins at 149 and 149. D.J. Slovick got the Panthers back on the board at 165, winning by a 20-5 tech fall to pull the Panthers within five points. Unfortunately, they could not build momentum off of the Slovick win, as the Tomcats put the match away with a pin at 174, a tech fall win at 184, and a major decision at 197. Pitt-Bradford was able to close the match with a victory, as Cameron Carter-Green pinned his opponent in 3:27 to win the heavyweight match.

The final match of the day saw the Panthers fall behind early but made a roaring comeback that fell just short. The hotly contested match saw both squads lose a team point through an unsportsmanlike conduct bench penalty. St. John Fisher was able to take a commanding 23-0 lead through 5 matches. Slovick stepped up again for Pitt-Bradford, getting the Panthers on the board with a 9-4 win at 165. Kyle Keefe pinned his opponent in 3:49 to pick up a win at 174 and cut the deficit to 14 points. In the final three matches, the Panthers needed to pick up extra points through pins, major decisions or tech falls, but their opponents were able to limit their scoring opportunities. Colton Gietler won by a 6-3 decision at 184 and Nathan Powley added a 2-0 win at 197, getting the Panthers 6 more points. Unfortunately, the results left the Panthers needing 8 points in the final match, with a maximum of 6. Despite the result no longer being in doubt, Carter-Green was able to pick up his second victory of the day, pinning his opponent in 1:18.

The Panthers fall to 4-10 on the season after the losses. They are scheduled to return to action next weekend, as they will travel to Washington & Jefferson for a set of dual matches.
