Panthers Kick-off Season at Adrian Invite

Adrian, Mi. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford wrestling team got its season started at the Adrian Invitational on Saturday. The Panthers did not pick up any points in the upper-class brackets but had two freshman wrestlers secure 6th place finishes in the freshman/sophomore bracket.

Six different Panther freshmen picked up wins on the day, led by Ja'Shad Bumpers and DJ Slovick, who both took 6th place in their respective weight classes. Wrestling at 125, Bumpers started his day with a 11-5 victory by decision. After dropping a tight quaterfinal match 11-10, Bumpers picked up two straight wins to earn a place in the placement round. He won his first match in the consolation bracket 3-1, and then followed that with a 7-2 decision. In his placement match, Bumpers went into extra time, where he fell by sudden victory by a score of 9-7.

DJ Slovick wrestled at 165, and after dropping his first match, rolled off 4 straight wins. He won three of the matches by fall, and the fourth by a tech fall, outscoring his opponent 16-0. Darren Christian Jr, Raymond Worsen, Henry Cummings, Kyle Keefe and Cameron Carter-Green all picked up a win as well.

The Panthers will regroup after their season opener and will return to action on Saturday, November 12, when they wrestle in the Washington & Jefferson Invitational.
