Four Panthers Make Podium, Newton Wins Weight Class at Jamestown Open

Jamestown, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford wrestling team was back in action at the Jamestown Open on Sunday. The Panthers had four wrestlers finish on the podium, including one winner.

Tyler Newton was able to take 1st place at 165 pounds. Newton started his day with a pin at just 28 seconds in his first match. He was even more dominant in his next match, as he won by tech fall with a score of 17-0. In the semifinal match, he was able to eke out a 1-0 victory to go to the finals, where he was named the winner after a medical forfeit by his opponent.

Jestin Poruban had his best day of the season as he took 4th place at 125. After receiving a first-round bye, Poruban earned a spot in the semifinal with a win by decision at 8-6. Poruban was knocked out of the medal round in the semifinal, but battled back for a win by pin at 1:21 in the consolation semifinal. In the third-place match, Poruban lost, giving him a 4th place finish at the event.

Two other Panthers were able to reach the podium in their weight classes, as Eli Hernandez and Nate Powley both finished in 6th place.

Hernandez wrestled at 149 and started his day with a tough 4-1 decision loss. He battled back, winning the next three matches in a row to reach the consolation semifinal. Hernandez won his second bout with a score of 11-4, and then picked up a second win by decision, defeating his opponent 4-1. Hernandez picked up his final win of the day with a pin at 4:21 in the consolation semifinal.

Powley also finished in 6th, wrestling at 184. Powley was unable to advance in the medal bracket, as he lost his first match of the day in the quarter-final by decision. He was able to advance into the consolation semi-final as he picked up a 10-1 major decision victory in the consolation bracket. He was unable to advance any further, giving him the 6th place finish.

Chase Proudfit was unable to make the podium but did reach the quarterfinal after a win by fall at 1:47. He was sent to the consolation bracket after a tight 3-2 decision loss and then was pinned at 3:33 in the consolation bracket to bring his day to an end.

The Panthers will be back in action this Wednesday night when they travel to Erie for a dual meet with Penn-State Behrend. The meet is scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m.
