Hernandez Take 1st at Jamestown Open

Jamestown, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford wrestling team competed at the Jamestown Open on Sunday and Sophomore Elijah Hernandez was the Panthers top finisher, taking first in the 133-pound weight class.

  • Hernadez went the distance in all four of his matches on the day, winning all four by decision. He began the day with a 16-4 major decision and followed that up with a sudden death 7-5 victory in the quarterfinal round. In the semis, Hernandez picked up a tight 2-1 victory and finished the tournament with an 8-3 win in the championship round. Hernandez's 1st place finish at the open was his first collegiate tournament victory.
  • Nate Powley also placed for the Panthers, finishing in fifth at 165. He received an opening-round bye and then won his quarterfinal match by an 8-4 decision. He lost his next two matches but was able to come back in his final match to clinch 5th place by pinning his opponent at 3:16.
  • Mitch Dowd went 2-2 on the day but was not able to place in the heavyweight class. He picked up a 12-4 major decision victory to start the day and after falling in the quarterfinal was able to pin his opponent at 6:30 in the consolation round.

The wrestling team will complete their regular-season schedule with one final dual meet on February 5th. They will travel to Erie, Pa. for a rematch with Penn State-Behrend. Earlier this year, the Panthers were able to pick up a win over the Lions. They tied 27-27, however, the Panthers earned an extra point via tiebreaking criteria for the win.
