WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford wrestling team competed in the first day of the two-day, double-elimination NCAA Division III Southeast Regional Friday.

The highlight of the program's first NCAA Regional competition was Sam Colebert's performance in the heavyweight class.

"I think all the guys did a great job," Head Coach Colin Johnston said. "Sam is doing a great job and to be the first guy to place at the regional tournament is a big deal for this program."

After the first day of action, Colebert advances to the second day still with a chance to qualify or the NCAA Championships.

The senior came into the event seeded and advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4 win by decision over his opponent (Tavon Blowe, Averett) in the first round.

However, he lost in the quarterfinals against Paul Triandafilou from Gettysburg by a 1-0 decision, moving to the consolation bracket.

He stayed alive with a victory in the consolation second round, pinning Roger Horton from Wilkes.

Colebert will now compete Saturday in the consolation quarterfinals for a chance to work his way into the top three finishers of the weight class and advance to the NCAA Championships.

Colton Davis (133 lbs.), Elijah Hernandez (141 lbs.), Victor Elias (157 lbs.), Nathan Powley (174 lbs.), Quentin Ellis (184 lbs.) and Mitch Dowd (197 lbs.) all saw their regional runs cut short in the consolation first round.

Powley earned his way into the championship first round with a pin in the prelim bout against Christopher Grecco from the host Lycoming.

Elias accomplished the same feat, earning his way into the bracket with a prelim win over Robert Fleming from York, 13-5.

Semifinals and consolation quarterfinals start Saturday at 10 a.m. at Lamade Gym.
