Panthers Win 3 at Brother Lacy Tournament, Finish 4th

Latrobe, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's bowling team made their annual trip to Latrobe on Saturday, as they competed in Saint Vincent's Brother Lacy Tournament at Lincoln Lanes. The Panthers went 3-2 on the day, earning a 4th place finish.

The Panthers bowled 5 traditional matches, with the first four deciding their final placement match, leaving the last match of the day to determine their final position. 

Pitt-Bradford kicked off the day with a match against Pitt-Greensburg. The Panthers used a huge game from anchor bowler Brookelyn Garvey to defeat the Bobcats 785-755. Garvey posted a score of 199 in the opener, while Sarah Newland bowled a 179. Olivia Shultz also had a strong performance, finishing at 164.

The Panthers had some tough luck in their second match of the day, as despite posting one of their best scores of the season, fell to the hosts 862-912. Olivia Shultz stepped up with her best game of the year, bowling to a score of 190. Newland was just behind Shultz at 188, and Erin Wales improved her score by 63 pins from the first game to post a 181 in the loss.

Pitt-Bradford bounced back in the third match of the day, posting their best score of the day, defeating Baldwin Wallace 870-790. Garvey returned to form with her second 199 game of the day. Newland posted another strong score of 181 in the win and Alexis Whitfield improved her score for the second straight game, posting a 166. 

The Panthers continued their hot streak in match four, taking down Penn State-Behrend 860-815. Wales exploded for her best game of the season, finishing with a score of 216. Garvey had another strong match at 194, while Newland remained consistent, finishing at 170.

In their placement match, the Panthers had a rematch with Pitt-Greensburg. Unfortunately, they were unable to keep their momentum, falling to the Bobcats 772-803. Whitefield posted the best score for the Panthers at 167, while Wales was right behind her at 159.

Brookelyn Gavey finished with the best average for the Panthers, as she totaled 179.8 pins per game. Despite not leading the Panthers in any single match, Sarah Newland was just behind Garvey with an average of 174.8. Erin Wales was next for the Panthers as she averaged 168.6 pins per match. Olivia Shultz averaged 159.8 per game and Whitfield rounded out the scoring with an average of 146.8.

The Panthers will have the next two weeks off and will return to action on Saturday, February 24th, when they travel to Pittsburgh to bowl in LaRoche's Unicorn Invite.
