Panthers Bowl to an 8th Place Finish at Brunswick Niagara Fall Open

Buffalo, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's bowling team completed their trip to Buffalo for the Brunswick Niagara Fall Open on Sunday. They bowled in three Baker matches, finishing the round-robin 1-3 before falling to D'Youville 4-2 in a placement mega-match.

The second day of competition was in the Baker Bowling format. The first four matches were decided by total pinfall over 5 games, while the placement match was determined by a best-of-seven single-game result.

The Panthers started the day with a tough matchup against William Smith. The Panthers performed well but were unable to keep up with their opponents, who ultimately won the match 848-925. The Panthers fell behind early after dropping game 1 156-181 and game 2 180-232. They battled back with a 192-187 victory in the third game before dropping the 4th 169-176. They were able to close the match with a 151-149 win in the 5th.

Match two saw the Panthers take on D'Youville, winning 811-740. They took advantage of a slow start by their opponents to take the first three games 153-117, 140-134 and 173-152. After slipping up and dropping the fourth game 160-178, the Panthers put the match away in the 5th game, easily winning 185-159.

Pitt-Bradford faced a difficult challenge in their third match of the day as they took on Mount St. Mary's, who are the 16th-ranked team in the nation. The Panthers battled early but lost the first three games of the match 151-184, 177-182, and 166-192. In the fourth game, the Panthers exploded with their best game of the round-robin, winning 228-162 to take a two-pin lead into the final match. Unfortunately for the Panthers, they could not carry the momentum into the final game, dropping the 5th game 147-184 to lose the match 869-904.

To close round-robin play, the Panthers bowled against the hosts, Niagara University. Pitt-Bradford could not keep up with the Purple Eagles, losing all five games which resulted in a final score of 786-906.

The Panthers finished the event with a placement mega-match against D'Youville. Pitt-Bradford fell behind after losing the first game 135-155. They battled back to win the next two games to take a 2-1 lead over the Saints. They won a low-scoring game 2 158-120, and then exploded in game 3, winning 234-210. The Panthers were unabe to maintain their form from the 3rd game however, as they fell in the next three games (117-150, 141-157, and 137-160) to lose the match 2-4.

The Panthers finished the event in 8th with a total pinfall of 7,177 for an average of 159.5 pins per game. They will be back in the Buffalo area next weekend as they will bowl in the Daemen Storm Fall Classic. The action starts on Saturday at Brad Angelo Lanes in Lockport.
