Panthers Win Two on Day 1 of AMCC Round Robin

Greensburg, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's bowling team posted a 2-3 record on the first day of the AMCC Round Robin event on Saturday. Bowling in the traditional format, the Panthers defeated Hilbert and William Smith, while falling to Saint Vincent, Medaille, and Penn State-Behrend.

Match one saw the Panthers take on Saint Vincent. The Panthers were able to post a strong score of 761 but were unable to keep up with the Bearcats who scored 821. Brookelyn Garvey continued her strong form from last weekend as she started her day with a 217. Sarah Newland posted a 167 in the leadoff spot.

The competition did not get easier for the Panthers in match two, as they then took on the defending AMCC champions, Medaille. The Panthers lost the match 752-862. Garvey once again had the high score of the game for Pitt-Bradford with a 165, while Ekaterina Wilson bowled a 165.

The Panthers were able to get into the win column with a dominating victory in their third match of the day. They defeated Hilbert 833-704. Garvey posted a 191, but the Panthers also received strong games from three other bowlers. Sarah Newland Posted a 171, while Alexis Whitfield had her best match of the day, finishing at 169. Wilson was just one pin behind her at 168. 

Pitt-Bradford got back to .500 on the day in match 4, as they defeated conference newcomers William Smith 809-585. Newland dominated the competition, posting the Panthers' second-best score of the day at 214. Garvey was next for the Panthers with a score of 157 pins, while Olivia Shultz had her best match of the day at 154.

Unfortunately, the Panthers were not able to come away with a third win, as they closed day one of the event with a 749-866 loss to Penn State-Behrend. Garvey had Pitt-Bradford's high score of the match at 194. Shultz continued her strong finish with a score of 150, while Newland was behind her at 141.

Garvey finished the day with the 5th best scoring average of all competitors at 185.00 pins per match. Sarah Newland was also in the top 20, posting an average of 168.6. Ekaterina Wilson finished with an average of 148.2 pins per match, putting her in 39th. Olivia Shultz and Alexis Whitfield rounded out the Panther scoring with averages of 139.8 and 139.2.

The Panthers head to day two in 6th place after their 2-3 start, but all three of their losses came to the top three teams in the standings. They will bowl in five more matches on the final day of the competition. Action is set to begin at 8:30 a.m.
