Panthers Unable to Hold Off Lions, Williams Sets Career High

Erie, Pa. -- Despite holding a double-digit second-half lead, the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team was unable to hold on as they fell to Penn State-Behrend by a score of 63-59.

Game Notes:

  • The Panthers got off to a slow offensive start, as they were only able to muster 4 points through the first 5 minutes of action. La'Shyra Williams ended a 3-minute scoring drought with a mid-range jump shot, that started a 9-3 run over the final 4:36 of the quarter.
  • Williams and Jasmin Miller made two more baskets inside before Shirleah Ragin completed a three-point play to put the Panthers ahead. Taylor Sutryk added two more free throws to cap off the rally.
  • After a back and forth start to the second quarter, the Panthers were able to go on a hot streak that saw them build a 10 point lead. Williams started the rally with two jumpers and a free throw. Ragin and miller each added two baskets inside before Williams capped off the rally with another layup. 
  • Jenna Hicks answered a late Lion basket before the teams held each other scoreless for the final 1:48 of the half. 
  • After the break, both teams restarted slowly, as they scored 5 points between them over the first 5 minutes.
  • Pitt-Bradford was able to push the lead to 10 within the final minute of play on baskets from Lyric Collins and Williams. The Lions were able to crawl back in the final minute of the 3rd to go to the final quarter down 5 points.
  • The Panthers pushed the lead back to 9 in the first minute of the 4th with two Williams free throws and a Sutryk jumper.
  • The Lions answered with a quick 12-0 run to turn the deficit into a three-point lead with 6:33 to go.
  • Penn State-Behrend pushed their lead to 6 points with 2:39 to go, before the Panthers made a final rally. Jenna Hicks made a layup on a press-break and Shaelyn Snipes put in a layup on a feed from Hicks to move within 1 possession. 
  • After converting a technical free throw, the Panthers were unable to take advantage of numerous opportunities to retake the lead. they missed 6 straight shots that could have put them ahead of the Lions. In the final 24 seconds, the Lions added 3 free throws, while the Panthers were unable to score again.

Leaders:

  • Freshman La'Shyra Williams set a new career-high, scoring 20 points on 7-16 shooting. She also grabbed 10 rebounds to record her first career double-double. In the first half, she scored 13 points on 6 of 8 shooting. 
  • Shirleah Ragin Scored 15 points in the game, while also grabbing 9 rebounds and picking up 5 steals. 
  • Jasmin Miller scored 7 points while Shaelyn Snipes added 5 points and 4 assists Jenna Hicks grabbed rebounds including 4 on the offensive end.

The tough loss moves the Panthers to 2-11 on the season and 2-4 in AMCC Play. They will return to action this Saturday when they host Penn State Altoona in the KOA Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
