Panthers Outslug Bobcats in Sweep

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford scored 17 runs over two games as they took care of Pitt-Greensburg in an AMCC doubleheader. The Panthers won game one 7-1, before winning the second game 10-2 in 5 innings.

Game One - Pitt-Bradford 7 - Pitt-Greensburg 1

In the opener, the Panthers used another strong pitching performance from Krislyn Clement to defeat Pitt-Greensburg 7-1.

Clement worked around an error in the top of the first to post a 0 on the scoreboard, and she was rewarded in the bottom of the frame, as the Panthers went ahead. Miranda Groll dropped a single into right field with one out, and then promptly stole second base. After a strikeout, Lexi Peters lined a double into dead centerfield to bring in Groll.

In the second, Clement allowed a leadoff single, before quickly getting two outs. With two down, the Bobcats were able to line a single into center field. Groll's throw to the plate was attempted to be cut off by Clement, who could not handle the throw, allowing the Bobcat runner to scamper home and tie the game. Clement struck out the next batter to end the frame.

Pitt-Bradford answered right back in the bottom of the second, exploding for 5 runs. Lilly Hamels started the rally with a double to left center and then scored two batters later when Hannah Fisher hit a one-out double down the right field line. Lizzy Hoovler continued the rally by drawing a walk, and then both runners moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Faith McLaughlin doubled the lead with a single through the left side and then stole second once she was on base. With two outs, Sara Stroup grounded a single up the middle to drive in a pair of runs. Stoup moved to second on the throw to the plate and scored a batter later when Peters hit a single to right.

Clement took over from there, stranding a pair of runners on base in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings. In the bottom of the 5th, she helped her own cause at the plate. With one out, Clement hit a hard line drive to right-center on the first pitch she saw, lining a home run over the fence. It was the first of her career. She followed that up with a 1-2-3 6th inning. She was relieved by Meghan Kapp in the 7th, who retired all three batters she faced.

Krislyn Clement (8-2) earned the win after allowing 1 unearned run in 6.0 innings of work. She scattered 6 hits and struck out 2 batters. At the plate, she was 1-3 with a solo home run. Lexi Peters had the only multi-hit game for the Panthers, finishing 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI. Sara Stroup also drove in a pair with her only hit of the game.

Game Two - Pitt-Bradford 10 - Pitt-Greensburg 2 (5 Innings)

The Panthers fell behind at the start of game two but were able to strike right back, to use three big innings to defeat the Bobcats 10-2 in 5 innings.

Bri Heller took the circle for the Panthers and was unlucky to allow a run in the first. The leadoff batter reached on an error and then moved all the way to third on a pair of passed balls before an out was recorded. Heller struck out the next batter for the first out but saw the run score on an RBI groundout to short. She ended the inning a batter later on a groundout back to the circle.

The Panthers struck right back in the bottom of the inning, scoring four times before an out could be recorded. Faith McLaughlin, Miranda Groll, and Sara Stoup all reached on free passes to start the frame. Two of the runners scored when a fly ball to shallow left was dropped for an error. Krislyn Clement singled down the left field line to add the third run of the frame. After Meghan Kapp singled back up the middle to reload the bases, Bri Heller dropped a single into right-center to bring in the fourth. The Panthers were not able to add any more in the frame, as the next three batters were retired to end the frame.

Heller retired the side in order in the 2nd, getting the Panther offense right back to the plate, where they would tack on three more runs. Miranda Groll started the inning with a double off the wall in left, and then quickly sprinted to third when the ball was dropped on the way to the infield. Following a sharp groundout to third, Groll raced home and scored when Lexi Peters reached on a fielder's choice back to the circle. Clement came to the plate next and hit a double to center field, allowing Peters to score from first, chasing the Pitt-Greensburg starting pitcher. After the pitching change, Meghan Kapp drove in Clement with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Bobcats loaded the bases with two outs in the 3rd, but Heller settled down and struck out her 2nd batter of the frame, ending the threat. After the Panthers went down quickly in their half of the third, Heller set down the side in order in the 4th. In the bottom of the 4th, the Panthers put a pair of runners on through singles by Groll and Peters but were not able to add to their lead.

In the 5th, Pitt-Greensburg started the inning with an infield single and then moved the runner into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. After a flyout to right, a single put runners on the corners with two outs. Heller nearly escaped the jam unscathed, as she induced a groundball, but it was not handled in the infield, allowing a run to score, cutting the Panther lead to 7-2.

The Panthers needed three runs to end the game early in their half of the frame, and using a one-out rally, quickly brought the game to a close. Sandra Watne started the inning with a pinch-hit single up the middle, her first of the year. After a strikeout, Anna Bokulich came to the plate and lined a double down the left field line. McLaughlin followed and hit a ground ball through the legs of the Pitt-Greensburg shortstop and into the gap, allowing both runners to score while she took second on the play. The next batter, Groll, hit a hard grounder through the left side to bring in McLaughlin and end the game.

Bri Heller (7-3) picked up the win after allowing 2 unearned runs on 4 hits in 5 innings pitched. She struck out 6 batters. Miranda Groll finished the game 3 for 3 with two runs scored and another driven in. Krisyln Clement had two more hits, driving in two runs and scoring one more. Faith McLaughlin and Lexi Peters both went 1 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

The victories bring Pitt-Bradford's record to 18-8 on the year with a 7-3 mark in AMCC play. They will have next week off for finals, before returning to action next Saturday at Mount Aloysius. Game time is slated for 1 & 3 in Cresson, Pa.
