Panther Softball Season Comes to An End After Two Pitcher's Duels

Panther Softball Season Comes to An End After Two Pitcher's Duels

Bradford, Pa. -- A University of Pittsburgh at Bradford softball season that saw the Panthers earn a share of the AMCC regular-season title came to an abrupt end on Monday as the Panthers were swept by #7 seeded LaRoche in back-to-back 1-0 defeats.

Game 1:

  • Following a delay prior to the start of the game, starting pitcher came out of the gate dealing, as she quickly got two foul outs and a grounder to get the Panthers out of the field and into the dugout right away.
  • Gabby Carpenter led off the game for the Panthers and ripped a single down the left field line. On the next play, Rachel Przybysz dropped down a bunt, and beat out the play for a single, but saw her teammate retired as she attempted to go first to third on the play. Przybysz was able to move to second on the play but did not score as Daytona Wentzel was set down on strikes and Hannah Lathrop flew out to deep center to end the inning.
  • The Panthers looked poised to strike again in the second after another Uhing quick inning. With two outs, Chloe Cordova drew a walk and then stole second base. She did not advance further as Mackenzie Bonyak struck out looking to end the inning and strand Cordova at second.
  • Uhing continued to cruise through the fourth inning, as she retired 6 straight batters. In the fifth, she allowed a lead-off single to end her no-hit bid, ut quickly got two strikeouts and a groundout to end the frame.
  • The top of the 7th saw Uhing get into and out of trouble without allowing a go-ahead run. Back-to-back hits allowed runners to get to first and second with one out. On the next pitch, Uhing was hit by a batted ball that rebounded to second base, where Przybysz collected it and threw out the runner for the second out. Uhing was able to recover after the comebacker, as she struck out a batter looking to strand the runners at second and third.
  • In the Panthers' half of the 7th, Faith McLaughlin reached with one out when she was hit by a pitch but was unable to move into scoring position, sending the game into extras.
  • In the extra frame, Uhing once again got into a jam, as with one out the RedHawks hit two singles, and loaded the bases with a hit batter. Uhing was able to get the next batter to hit a soft ground ball in the infield, but it was too soft for Carpenter to make a play anywhere but first, allowing the go-ahead run to score.
  • In the bottom of the 8th, Carpenter collected her second hit of the day with a single to center. Przybysz followed this with a liner that was caught on the run in center field, and Wentzel grounded into a force out to end the game.
  • Uhing (8-2) took the loss in the game. She allowed only 1 run on 5 hits in 8 innings pitched. She struck out 7.
  • Carpenter and Przybysz each finished the game 2 for 4 with two singles.
  • Mackenzie Bonyak had the only other hit for the panthers, a single in the 5th.

Game 2:

  • Needing a win to keep their season alive, the Panthers turned to Kerrigan Hoffmann in the circle. Hoffmann delivered as she kept the Redhawks at bay for 6 innings.
  • Hoffmann allowed a one-out single to left in the first but got two groundouts to end the inning unscathed.
  •  In the second, she got the first two batters, but then used some help from her defense for the third. Hoffmann gave up a hit to deep left, but Mackenzie Bonyak was able to field the ball cleanly and make a strong throw to second to get the batter for the third out.
  • After that, Hoffmann retired the next 13 batters in order to keep LaRoche off the board. Unfortunately, the Panthers were not able to take advantage of Hoffmann's success, as they were only able to collect two hits.
  • In the 4th, Carpenter broke up the no-hitter by dropping a single down the right field line. She stole second base in the next at-bat, but the next three batters were retired on a strikeout, fly ball, and popup to end the threat.
  • Hoffmann picked up the other hit for the Panthers, a two-out single to left in the 5th.
  • In the final frame, the Redhawks were able to push across a run on 2 hits and an error. After the lead-off batter grounded out, the next two batters reached on a single through the left side of the infield, and a sharply hit ground ball that was ruled an error. Hoffmann got the second out of the inning on a fielder's choice at third base, but a clutch two-out single to right brought home the eventual winning run.
  • In the final at-bat, the Panthers were set down in order to end the game and their season.
  • Hoffmann threw a complete game allowing only one unearned run on 4 hits. She struck out 1. She also went 1 for 2 at the plate, with a single.
  • Carpenter finished the game 1-3 with a stolen base.

The losses bring an end to an eventful, difficult season, that was unlike any before it. The Panthers (16-6) had both team and individual successes on the field this year.

Without the benefit of a fall season to acclimate their first-year players, the panthers win a share of the AMCC regular-season title, their first since 2010. They won 16 games, the most for the program since 2014, and their .727 winning percentage was the program's best since 2006 when the Panthers went 35-9.

Jordan Uhing threw two no-hitters this season, the 5th and 6th in program history. Hannah Lathrop hit 3 home runs in a doubleheader, while Gabby Carpenter likely finished her career with career bests in batting average, .413, and stolen bases, 17.

While the Panthers' season may not have the fairy tale ending the team had hoped for, it was certainly one for the record books!
