Softball Keeps Rolling, Sweep Pitt-Greensburg

Softball Keeps Rolling, Sweep Pitt-Greensburg

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford softball team picked up two more victories on Saturday, sweeping Pitt-Greensburg on the road.

The Panthers responded to a late comeback to win game one 7-6 in extra innings and took the nightcap 4-2 behind another strong performance from Jordan Uhing.

Game 1:

  • The Panthers jumped on their hosts immediately in game one, scoring in their first at-bat. Gabby Carpenter led off with a double to left-center and then moved to third on a Rachel Przybysz single to right. Przybysz stole second during the next at-bat, which ended in a strikeout. Hannah Lathrop came through with one out, grounding out to second base, but allowing Carpenter to score on the play.
  • Despite a quick first inning, starting pitcher Kerrigan Hoffmann ran into trouble in the second. She allowed a leadoff double, and then a single moved the runner to third, and an error in the infield allowed the runner to score and tie the game. Hoffmann got a strikeout and a grounder, but a two-out walk allowed the Bobcats to successfully pull off a double steal to take the lead.
  • Their lead did not last long, as the Panthers jumped back on top with two in the third. Przybysz started the rally with a one-out infield single. She moved to third when Daytona Wentzel rapped a double down the left-field line.
  • Lathrop came through again, dropping a single into right field to bring in Przybysz and tie the game at 2. After Lathrop stole second, Lexi Peters singled to left to give the Panthers a 3-2 lead.
  • Pitt-Bradford tacked on another run in the 4th. Mackenzie Bonyak led off with a single and moved up a base when Kendra Colegrove was hit by a pitch. Carpenter brought Bonyak around on the next at-bat, driving a single to right field.
  • In the 5th, the hosts tied the game back up with two more runs. They used 3 hits, including a double and a two-out single to center to bring in the runs.
  • In the next frame, the Panthers regained the two-run advantage. Carpenter reached on an error and quickly stole second. Wentzel drew a walk, and then both runners advanced a base as Lathrop reached on a fielder's choice that did not record an out.
  • Lexi Peters came through with the big hit this time, driving a two-out double into the gap in right-center.
  • In the 6th, Hoffmann was replaced by Abby Hinkley. Hinkley got into a jam, allowing two singles, but was able to escape the inning with no runs scored. She was not as lucky in the 7th.
  • In the 7th, Pitt-Greensburg was able to get the first two batters on base with a single and ahit by pitch. Hinkley retired the next two but saw the game continue on an error. The Bobcats scored one on the error, and took advantage of the extra out, as they then singled to tie the game and send it into extra innings.
  • The Panthers quickly made use of the placed runner at second base in the bonus frame, scoring without the benefit of a hit. Carpenter, who was retired to end the 7th, took third on a wild pitch, and then scored when Przybysz grounded out to second. Wentzel followed this with a double to left but was unable to score.
  • Jordan Uhing replaced Hinkley with the one-run lead in the 8th. She allowed a bloop single that put runners on the corners to start the inning, however, she made a big defensive play on the next play. She fielded a grounder back to the circle and was able to retire the runner at third.
  • With one down, Uhing induced another ground ball that retired one runner but left runners on the corners once again. She was able to get the next batter to fly out to the left to end the game.
  • Uhing picked up her first save of the season with her Houdini act in the 8th inning.
  • Abby Hinkley gets the win, after allowing two unearned runs in 2 innings pitched.
  • Hoffmann gets a no-decision. She allowed 4 runs, 3 earned, in 5 innings of work. She struck out 1.
  • The Panthers had 6 different players collect multihit games in the contest.
  • Lexi Peters was the main run producer, finishing 2 for 5 with 3 runs batted in.
  • Hannah Lathrop drove in two and had one hit in the game.
  • Daytona Wentzel went 2 for 4 and had two doubles and 2 runs scored. She also drew a walk.
  • Gabby Carpenter had 2 hits in 5 at-bats and scored three times.

Game 2:

  • The second game of the day started in a similar fashion to its predecessor, as once again, the Panthers scored in the first. Carpenter beat out an infield hit to start the game and quickly stole second. She moved to third on a groundout to short and scored on a second groundout by Daytona Wentzel.
  • Jordan Uhing used her lead to her advantage again, as she made quick work of the Bobcats, allowing only a two-out walk in the first 3 innings she pitched.
  • In the third, the Panthers added two more runs to expand their advantage to three. Dolcey Shunk led off with a single to right and advanced to second when Bonyak reached on an error. Shunk was thrown out at home when Wentzel singled to right, but both runners were able to move up n the throw. Lathrop came through with another big two-out hit for the Panthers, this time driving a 2-run double to the gap.
  • Uhing hit a small snag in the 4th, as the hosts were able to push two runs across. Uhing allowed her first hit of the game, a single with one out, and then after a pop-up, hit a batter to put runners on first and second. She then allowed a bases-clearing triple to right-center, which cut the Panther lead to just one run.
  • Uhing's one-run lead looked in danger in the 5th, as she allowed two two-out hits, but was able to get the next batter to pop up in foul territory to end the threat.
  • The Panthers took the momentum back in the 6th, adding on a run to restore the 2-run cushion. Wentzel lined a single to right-center to start the inning but was then forced out as Lathrop reached on a fielder's choice.
  • Lathrop was lifted for a pinch-runner, Sadie Wood, who then moved up a base when Lexi Peters singled back up the middle. A second fielder's choice saw wood retired at third.
  • With two outs, Coach Phillips pressed the right buttons, as pinch hitter Abby Hinkley singled up the middle to bring in Peters and put the Panthers up 4-2.
  • Uhing took over from there, retiring the side in order in the sixth and allowing only a one-out single in the 7th.
  • Uhing picked up the win in the game, marking her AMCC leading 7th victory of the year. She allowed 2 runs on 5 hits. She struck out 6.
  • Daytona Wentzel had the only multiple-hit game for Pott-Bradford, finishing 2 for 3. She hit her third double of the day in the contest, scored a run, and drove in another.
  • Lathrop also drove in two more runs, going 1 for 3 in the game.

The sweep moves the Panthers to 14-4 on the season and 12-2 in conference play. They are currently in first place in the AMCC but are tied with Penn State-Behrend, who owns the tiebreaker, in the loss column. Along with other results around the conference, the wins guarantee that the Panthers will receive no lower than the #2 seed in the AMCC tournament. The Panther's next game will be Saturday, May 1st when they host LaRoche for their final AMCC regular-season doubleheader. Game 1 is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m
