Uhing Fires 3rd No Hitter in Pitt-Bradford History, Panthers Sweep Mavericks

Bradford, Pa. -- Jordan Uhing pitched a no-hitter on Tuesday, as the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford softball team swept the Medaille Mavericks in an AMCC doubleheader. The games were scheduled to be played in Buffalo but were moved to Bradford due to field conditions.

Uhing's no-hitter is the third in program history, and the first since Morgan Bellush accomplished the feat in 2018. Behind the strength of Uhing's performance, the Panthers took game 1 10-0 and won the second game 4-3.

Game 1:

  • Playing as the visiting team on their home field, the Panthers jumped ahead quickly with a 3 run top of the first. Gabby Carpenter singled through the right side of the infield, and then took two bases on a sacrifice bunt. Faith McLaughlin brought her in as she hit a sacrifice fly that was dropped. Lexi Peters grounded a single through the left side to continue the inning and Daytona Wentzel brought both runners around, as she doubled to the gap in right-center.
  • Uhing made quick work of the Mavericks in the bottom half of the inning, getting a ground out and to strikeouts.
  • Medaille's only runners of the contest reached in the 2nd. Uhing allowed a one-out walk and then saw the next batter reach base on a fielder's choice that did not result in an out. Uhing was able to get out of the jam, striking out the next two batters.
  • Uhing went on to retire 14 straight batters to end the game. Uhing struck out 7 Mavericks in the game, but did not accomplish her feat on her own, she did get some help from her defense. In the bottom of the third, shortstop Gabby Carpenter made two strong plays to preserve the no-hitter. First, she got to a ball in the hole and made a long throw across the diamond in time to nab the runner. On the very next play, Carpenter ranged to her glove side, just reaching a grounder up the middle. She made an off-balance throw that just beat the baserunner thanks to a big stretch from Hannah Lathrop at first.
  • With Uhing cruising, the Panthers exploded for 6 runs in the top of the 6th inning. Dolcey Shunk drew a lead-off walk and moved to second after Carpenter reached on an error. Following a fielders' choice and a wild pitch, McLaughlin drove a single to center to bring the two runs around.
  • McLaughlin took second and third on a wild pitch and passed ball, and then scored when Lathrop drilled a double down the line. Lexi Peters followed that up with a double that crashed off the top of the fence and back into play to bring in Lathrop.
  • Wentzel came through again with another 2-out hit to bring Peters home and took second on the throw home. The extra base came back to hurt the MAvericks as pinch hitter Imani Jackson dropped a ball on the right-field line to bring in the final run.
  • With a 10 run lead, Uhing came back out for the 6th needing three outs to complete her no-hitter. Lathrop made another big play at first, scooping a low throw on a bunt attempt to start the inning. After that Uhing got two more grounders to close the game, and the no-hitter.
  • Uhing (5-1) pitched all six innings, allowing only one walk. She struck out 7.
  • Wentzel went 4 for 4 in the game, driving in two runs and scoring another.
  • Peters finished 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.
  • Faith McLaughlin went 1 for 1, with 2 walks, a run scored, and three RBIs.

Game 2:

  • The Panthers got off to a quick start again in the nightcap. Carpenter started the game with a walk, and took second on a passed ball, Chloe Cordova grounded a single through the left side to move Carpenter to 3rd and took second on the throw in from the outfield. McLaughlin brought Carpenter home on an RBI groundout to 3rd.
  • The Mavericks were able to respond right away on starting pitcher Kerrigan Hoffmann. After getting no-hit in the first game, Medaille didn't wait long to pick up a hit, as the lead-off batter singled to center. Hoffmann was able to get the next two batters to ground out, but gave up an RBI single and run-scoring double before striking out the final batter of the first to head to the 2nd with Medaille leading 2-1.
  • In the 2nd, it was the Panthers' turn to respond. Sadie Wood hit a one-out single down the right field line and then moved to third on a Kendra Colegrove double to left field. Mackenzie Bonyak hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Wood and Rachel Przybysz hit a single that landed on the right field line to bring Colegrove around and put the Panthers up 3-2.
  • Medaille tied the game off Hoffmann in the bottom half, as the leadoff batter singled and then scored on a double to the gap in right-center. Hoffmann used two strikeouts and her batterymate, Colegrove, threw out a runner stealing to keep the game tied at 3.
  • Hoffmann would shut things down from there, allowing 2 hits, a walk, and a runner to reach on an error for the remainder of the game.
  • The Panthers took the lead for good in the 4th. Colegrove led off with her second double of the day, as she lined a 2-0 pitch into the gap in right-center. She scored a batter later, as Bonyak ripped a single into center.
  • As Hoffmann kept the Mavericks off the board, Pitt-Bradford was also held scoreless for the final 3 innings.
  • In the 7th, the tying run reached as the first batter of the inning reached on a throwing error that just pulled Lathrop off the bag at first. The runner advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then moved to third on another ground ball to the right side.
  • With the game-tying run 60 feet from home, Hoffmann got the next batter to ground out to third and end the game.
  • Hoffmann (5-1) picked up the win after allowing 3 runs on 8 hits and a walk. She set a new career-high for strikeouts in a game with 6.
  • Colegrove finished the game 2 for 3 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored.
  • Bonyak went 2 for 2 and drove in 2 runs, including the game-winner.
  • Rachel Przybysz also recorded a multi-hit game, finishing 2 for 3 with an RBI.

The wins move the Panthers to 10-4 on the season with an 8-2 record in AMCC play. The Panthers' next game is scheduled for Thursday afternoon, as they will host Hilbert. Game one is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. with the second game starting shortly after the completion of the first.
