Panther Softball Makes Quick Work of Pioneers

Panther Softball Makes Quick Work of Pioneers

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford softball team swept the Alfred State Pioneers in two quick games on their first home game day in nearly two years. They came back late to win the first game 3-1, and dominated the second, winning 9-1 in 5 innings.

Game 1:

  • The Panthers got off to a slow start in their first game action in 2 weeks. They were held scoreless through the first 5 frames of play, only collecting two hits in those innings. The first was a two-out single from Gabby Carpenter on the 3rd. Mackenzie Bonyak rapped one to center for the second in the 5th.
  • As the Panther offense got its legs back, Jordan Uhing was back to her dominant self, keeping the Pioneers shut down throughout the game. Alfred State was able to push a run across in the 3rd when back-to-back fly balls dropped in for doubles after fielders lost them in the sun.
  • The Panthers were finally able to breakthrough in the 6th. They received some help early on as Carpenter was able to reach base on an Alfred State error to lead off the inning. She quickly stole second and moved to third on a flyout to right.
  • Freshman Faith McLaughlin dropped a clutch single over the shortstops head, to bring in Carpenter and tie the game at 1. Hannah Lathrop singled to center to put the go-ahead run on third and was lifted for pinch-runner Sadie Wood, who quickly stole second base.
  • With the winning run on third, Daytona Wentzel hit a single into right field to bring in both runners and give the Panthers a 3-1 lead.
  • Uhing came back out for the 7th and closed the game down quickly. She got a pop-up back to the circle, strikeout, and a groundout to short to end the game.
  • Uhing (3-0) finished with a complete-game victory, allowing 1 earned run on 4 hits. She struck out 7 Pioneers.
  • Wentzel finished 1-3 with 2 RBIs on the game-winning single. She also stole a base.
  • McLaughlin also went 1-3.
  • Gabby Carpenter finished 1-3 and stole 2 bases.

Game 2:

  • The Panthers rolled their late-inning momentum from the opener, right into the second game, as they were able to score right away in the first. McLaughlin lined a two-out single to left-center and immediately was brought home, as Hannah Lathrop ripped a double into the same gap.
  • Pitt-Bradford added to the lead in the 3rd. With one out Wentzel drove a line drive to left field which was unable to be held onto and allowed her to move to second base. Following a grounder to the pitcher, Kendra Colegrove lined a single to centerfield to bring Wentzel home and double the Panther lead.
  • The inning was allowed to continue when Mackenzie Bonyak reached on a throwing error, and the Panthers took advantage. Dolcey Shunk picked up another two-out hit for the Panthers, dropping a bloop into centerfield to bring both runners home. She hustled right out of the box on the play to leg out her first double of the season.
  • The Panthers tacked on more runs in the 4th inning. Chloe Cordova singled to left to lead off the frame and scampered to second after the ball was mishandled in the outfield. She moved to third on a passed ball and after a McLaughlin walk and stolen base, the Panthers were back in business with runners on second and third and none out.
  • Pitt-Bradford used two productive outs to bring the runners home. Hannah Lathrop brought in the first with a grounder to second base, and Wentzel brought home the second with a sacrifice fly to right.
  • The Panthers continued the inning with a two-out burst that saw them push the lead to 8. Wood and Colegrove drove back-to-back singles up the middle to start the rally. Mackenzie Bonyak followed this with a double off the wall in left field to bring in Wood. Bonyak had one more big play in the inning as with the bases loaded she won a foot race to the third-base bag to allow Colegrove to score on a Carpenter fielder's choice.
  • While the Panthers were pouring in the runs, pitcher Kerrigan Hoffmann was keeping the Pioneers at bay. She ran into trouble in the opening frame, as runners reached on an error and a walk, but Hoffmann settled down to get a lineout to center and a fly ball to the gap to get out of the inning. That would be the last time the Pioneers would threaten to score against Hoffmann, as she allowed only two runners to reach in her remaining three innings of work. She came back after both of those batters reached, striking out a batter to end each inning.
  •  Abby Hinkley entered the game in the 5th for the Panthers, marking her first appearance in the circle this season. She allowed a leadoff home run to Jada Parsons but settled down to keep the Pioneers at only one run scored.
  • Once again the Panthers made quick work of things in the bottom of the inning to bring the game to an early end. Jessica Milliron led off with a bloop single to center and then moved to third base when Hannah Lathrop hit her second double of the game, this time to right-center. Wentzel brought the second game to a close in the next at-bat, as she lined a single to center to bring Milliron home.
  • Hoffmann (3-0) picked up the win, allowing no runs on 1 hit in 4.0 innings. She struck out 3 batters. In 10 innings of work against Alfred State, Hoffmann has not allowed a run and tallied two wins.
  • Abby Hinkley pitched only the 5th inning, allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits.
  • Two Panthers collected multiple-hit games. Kendra Colegrove went 2 for 3 in the contest. She scored 2 runs and drove in 1. Hannah Lathrop finished the game 2 for 4. She hit two doubles and brought in two runs.
  • In the 9 spot, Dolcey Shunk reached all three times she came to the plate in the game. She drew two walks and had the 2-run single in the third.
  • Daytona Wentzel finished the doubleheader 2-5 and drove in 4 runs.

The Panthers are now 6-0 on their season, with a 4-0 record in AMCC play. Their next game will be on Wednesday, April 14th, as they head to Erie for an AMCC doubleheader with Penn State-Behrend.
