Panthers Sweep Mounties in AMCC Games of the Week

Cresson, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford softball team picked up two more wins on Saturday, sweeping an AMCC doubleheader at Mount Aloysius.

Earlier in the week, the AMCC chose this matchup as its games of the week. The Panthers came away with a 4-3 victory in the opening game and won the nightcap 3-1.

Game 1:

  • The Panthers got off to a quick start, putting a run on the board immediately. Gabby Carpenter led off the contest and lined a single into right-center. After Carpenter advanced to second on a grounder, Hannah Lathrop came up big and dropped a bloop single into right to bring in the run.
  • The Mounties tied things up in the 2nd but starting pitcher Kerrigan Hoffmann was able to keep the Mounties at bay early to keep the game tied through 4.
  • In the 5th, the Panthers were able to retake the lead with a quick attack. Chloe Cordova led off the inning with a single to center field, and then cleanup hitter Hannah Lathrop provided the big blast, driving a home run over the left field wall. The round-tripper was the first in Lathrop's career.
  • Pitt-Bradford tacked on a 4th run in the 6th inning. Dolcey Shunk led off with a single to center and moved over to third on a walk and a wild pitch. She was able to score a batter later on a Cordova groundout.
  • The Mounties were able to tighten the game in their half of the 6th, hitting a two-run homer of their own to cut the lead to 1.
  • In the final inning, the Mounties were able to put the tying run on third base with only one out. Hoffmann came up big, striking out the next batter and then making a sliding catch on a pop-up on the infield to win the game.
  • Hoffmann (2-0) picked up her second win of the season, going the distance for the Panthers. She allowed 3 earned runs on 7 hits and a walk. She struck out 5 batters.
  • Lathrop was the offensive star for the Panthers. She went 3 for 3 and was a triple shy of the cycle. She drove in 3 of the Panthers' 4 runs and also drew a walk late in the game.
  • Dolcey Shunk and Mackenzie Bonyak also produced at the bottom of the Panther lineup, picking up two hits apiece.

Game 2:

  • Pitt-Bradford got off to a quick start once again, scoring two runs in the opening frame. Carpenter led off the contest with a double to the gap in left center, and scored a batter later when Kendra Colegrove singled up the middle.
  • Colegrove, who advanced to second on a throw home, was able to score three batters later when Daytona Wentzel was able to reach on an error to extend the inning.
  • Senior pitcher Jordan Uhing took over from there, as she retired the first 11 batters she faced.
  • The Panthers were able to tack on a third run in the 3rd. Carpenter once again led off with a hit, singling to left. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored when Lathrop dropped a two-out single into right center.
  • Those runs would be all the Panthers needed as Uhing shut down the defending champions for the duration of the game. She only allowed three hits, two of them to reigning AMCC Player of the Year Lydia Defazio. She allowed a single in the 4th, a solo home run in the 6th, and an infield single in the 7th.
  • Uhing (2-0) finished with her second complete game of the season. Her final line read 7 innings pitched with 1 earned run on three hits and a hit batter. She walked none and struck out 11 Mounties.
  • Carpenter finished the game 3 for 3 and scored 2 of the Panthers' runs.
  • Colegrove, Lathrop, and Shunk added 3 other singles for the Panthers.

The victories move the Panthers' record to 4-0 with a 2-0 record in AMCC competition. They will take a week off until they host La Roche University next Saturday.
