Panthers Sweep Season Opener; Phillips Wins 300th at UPB

Alfred, N.Y. – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford softball team swept their season-opening doubleheader at Alfred State. They took the first game 5-1 and won the second 12-0 in 6 innings. The two wins put head coach Tina Phillips at 300 wins at the helm of the program.

Game 1:

  • The first game of the day saw a dominant performance from AMCC Preseason Pitcher of the Year Jordan Uhing. Uhing tossed a complete game, missing out on a shutout after allowing a run in the 7th. She scattered 5 hits and struck out 8 Pioneers, including 5 of the first 6 batters.
  • The Panther offense got off to a slow start but came alive in the 3rd. Katie Marx led off the inning with a single up the middle and then the Panthers quickly loaded the bases with a bunt single and a fielder's choice that did not record an out.
  • Chloe Cordova brought in the first run of the season with a sacrifice fly to center. A few pitches later, Gabby Carpenter and Dolcey Shunk pulled off a double steal to double the advantage.
  • Marx came up big in the 4th, driving in a run with a clutch two-out double to center.
  • The 5th saw the panthers add to their lead. Cordova hit a one-out double down the line, and scored a batter later when Freshman Faith McLaughlin tripled down the right field line for her first collegiate hit.
  • McLaughlin scored a batter later on a Hannah Lathrop single back up the middle.
  • Marx finished the game 3 for 3 and had an RBI and a run scored.

Game 2:

  • The Panthers continued their hot hitting in the second game, pounding out 15 hits and scoring 12 runs. This combined with a shutout performance from senior pitcher Kerrigan Hoffmann saw the Panthers win in 6.
  • The offense started up quickly, scoring 2 runs in the opening frame. Cordova and McLaughlin each singled and stole a base in the inning to start the rally. Cordova scored on a wild pitch and McLaughlin a batter later on an RBI groundout from Kendra Colegrove.
  • Pitt-Bradford was held in check for two innings but added 3 more in the 4th with a 2 out rally.
  • Mackenzie Bonyak and Dolcey Shunk flipped the lineup around, each drawing a two-out walk and stealing a bag. Carpenter legged out an infield single to continue the inning and bring in Bonyak.
  • Chloe Cordova provided the big hit after that, driving a double to the left center gap to score both runners.
  • The Panthers were able to tack on a 6th run in the 5th. They used 3 hits and a walk to start the inning to score the run. Sadie Wood provided the final blow, singling to left.
  • With the mercy rule looming, the Panthers exploded for 6 runs in the 6th inning to help bring the game to an early close.
  • The Panthers once again began the inning with 3 straight singles, and Imani Jackson brought in the first run with a bases loaded walk.
  • Following a strikeout, Colegrove scored on a wild pitch, and Bonyak and Shunk each recorded run-scoring singles to push the lead to 10.
  • The final two runs scored on a Carpenter groundout and an error.
  •  Hoffman quickly finished the game to mark her 2nd career shutout. She scattered 6 hits, allowing on in each inning, as well as one walk. She struck out 4 batters.
  • The Panthers were rampant on the base paths, stealing 8 bases in the contest. Carpenter and Shunk each had 2 while Cordova, McLaughlin, Lathrop, and Bonyak had one apiece.
  • The balanced offensive attack for the Panthers saw each starter record at least one hit, with 4 panthers recording multi-hit games.
  • Along with good performances at the plate and in the field, the Panthers were also strong in the field, as they did not commit an error in either game of the day.

The two wins put Coach Phillips over the 300 win mark for her time at Pitt-Bradford. She is in her 18th year with the program and has won 4 AMCC Tournaments and claimed 2 regular-season titles. She has coached 5 players that have won conference player, pitcher, or newcomer of the year awards and 56 all-conference awardees. Her players have also been a success in the classroom and in the community. 59 of her players have been named NFCA Scholar All-Americans and 115 AMCC All-Academic Team honorees.

The sweep puts the Panthers at 2-0 on the young season. While playing a fellow AMCC member, the doubleheader does not count towards the team's conference record, as it was designated as a non-conference game. The Panthers will start their conference play on Saturday on the road at 2019 and 2019 conference champions Mount Aloysius. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
