BRADFORD, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford softball team split a doubleheader with Franciscan Saturday at the Kessel Athletics Complex.

The Panthers (15-11, 3-3 AMCC) came through with an 8-5 win in game one before falling 5-3 in game two.

"A tough split today," Head Coach Tina Phillips said. "Really wanted the sweep at home, but it's a conference win. Couldn't string enough hits together in the second game. Gabby and Maddy had great days. We just got to get production up and down the lineup. But we will be ready to get back at it on Wednesday."

Jordan Uhing worked a complete-game victory in game one to improve to 9-3 on the season.

Gabby Carpenter and Maddy Hillery had three hits each in game one, while Hillery and Liz Dzurisin drove in three runs apiece.

Carpenter scored the team's first run of the day on a Franciscan throwing error in the bottom of the first.

Then in the second, Betty Fratercangelo knocked a two-run single, Dzurisin hammered a two-run double and Hillery worked an RBI single to open the game up and put the Panthers ahead 6-0.

Franciscan got two back, one apiece in the third and fourth, to cut the deficit to 6-2.

But the Panthers got one back in the bottom of the fourth as Carpenter scored on a ball in play but Hillery.

In the top of the sixth, an inside-the-park home run and an RBI single for Franciscan brought the score to 7-4.

Hillery sent home one more in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single.

The Barons cut it to 8-5 with an RBI single to left, but that's as close as they'd get.

In game two, the Barons grabbed the first run of the game on an RBI double, then scored their second run of the game in the second inning on a sacrifice fly.

The Barons doubled their lead with a two-run double in the fifth, then worked a 5-0 lead with a sacrifice fly.

With two down in the fifth, the Panthers rallied for three runs to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Hillery doubled to right center, then scored on a Dzurisin double that landed close to the same spot.

Sophia Fratercangelo scored Chandler White from second on a hard-hit ball to short, then Melissa Nye singled home Uhing with a ball up the middle.

But Pitt-Bradford would be unable to get any more runners across and the Barons' five early runs held tough for the win.

Kerrigan Hoffmann threw all seven innings in the circle for the Panthers, striking out one and walking three.

Nye dropped in a pair of hits to lead the Panthers' eight-hit effort.

Up next, Pitt-Bradford will host Medaille for a doubleheader at the Kessel Athletics Complex Wednesday.
