BRADFORD, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford softball team picked up its first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victories of the season with a doubleheader sweep of Hilbert at the Kessel Athletics Complex Tuesday.
The Panthers (12-10, 2-2 AMCC) rolled to a 9-0 win in game one then rallied to a 12-6 victory in game two.
"Tale of two games, but we will take conference wins any way you can get them," Head Coach Tina Phillips said. "Jordan was dominant on the mound today and our bats caught fire. In that second game, Melissa's hit was huge to give us the lead. Great job by Kendra to find a way on and Lindsey doing her job getting her in scoring position. Mel came in and held them in the middle innings to keep us in it. Maddy, Liz and Soph had big days too to lead the offense. Great team effort."
In the second game, the two teams entered the seventh inning tied 6-6, but Pitt-Bradford with two down, Pitt-Bradford doubled its run total and came away with a 12-6 advantage.
Game one saw a dominant start from Jordan Uhing in the circle backed by doubles from Liz Dzurisin and Maddy Hillery with a triple from Gabby Carpenter for a five-inning win.
Uhing earned wins in both Panther games, as she came in in relief in game two, held the go-ahead run at third in the sixth and later held the lead through the seventh to improve to 7-3 on the season.
Pitt-Bradford took the lead in game one in the second as Madison East scored on a throwing error, then Pitt-Bradford added two more in the third as Dzurisin doubled home Hillery and later scored on a single from Sophia Fratercangelo.
Then Pitt-Bradford broke the game open with a six-spot in the fourth as East scored on a throwing error once again, Carpender sent Kendra Colegrove and Lindsey Hull home on a triple to left center and later scored on a Grace Dadzaa single.
Dzurisin capped the scoring with a two-run single, giving her three RBIs for the game.
Hilbert worked a pair of runners on in the sixth, looking to extend the ballgame, but Uhing induced a groundout to complete the game.
Game two was a back-and-forth affair.
The Panthers started right where they left off with a pair of runs in the first as Dzurisin singled home Carpenter and Hillery scored on a bases-loaded walk.
Hilbert scored its first run of the day with a single in the first and later opened up a 4-2 lead with a two-run single in the second and an RBI single in the third.
But Hillery tied it with a two-run double in the fourth then scored to give the Panthers a 5-4 lead on a single from Dzurisin.
Hilbert regained the lead once again with a two-run double to deep center in the fourth and held it the advantage until Sophia Fratercangelo singled home Hillery in the sixth to bring the score to 6-6.
In the bottom of the sixth, Dzurisin erased a leadoff single with a double play at first.
Hilbert then followed that up with a two-out triple, bringing Uhing back into the circle with the go-ahead run at third.
She induced a fly out to right to end the threat and preserve the tie.
Colegrove pinch hit to start the seventh and singled.
Then with two down, Melissa Nye scored Colegrove with a pinch-hit single up the middle, giving the Panthers a 7-6 lead.
Hillery later scored Dadzaa on a single, and Mackenzie Bonyak opened up the game with a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double to left center.
East then tripled and scored Bonyak to round out the scoring.
Kerrigan Hoffmann started in the circle before handling the ball off to Melanie Davis. Uhing closed it out.
Up next, Pitt-Bradford will venture out of AMCC action and head to Alfred State Thursday before hosting Franciscan Saturday.
