ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford softball team earned a split at Elmira Tuesday, capturing the win in game one before falling in the nightcap.
Pitt-Bradford (10-8) came through with a 5-2 win in the first game, then fell 10-2 in the second game.
"Tough split," Head Coach Tina Phillips said. "Melanie pitched well and I'm happy to see her get her first win and the defense played well behind her. Just couldn't string anything together in the second game and then we had one bad inning. But we are excited to open AMCC play tomorrow."
Madison East knocked the Panthers' first homer of the season in the fourth inning of game two.
In game one, both teams went scoreless in the early goings until Liz Dzurisin knocked an RBI double to left center in the top of the third to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
That lead would hold until Pitt-Bradford rallied for three more runs in the sixth.
Lindsey Hull dropped in an RBI single, Hannah Lathrop scored on a passed ball and Katie Marx drove one home on a ball in play to make up the Panthers' scoring for the inning.
An RBI double from Sophia Fratercangelo in the seventh brought Pitt-Bradford's lead to 5-0.
Elmira rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh but the Panther lead would hold.
In the circle, Melanie Davis tossed all seven innings and did not give up an earned run to pick up her first career victory.
Aiding the Panther offense was a 3-for-4 performance from Mackenzie Bonyak.
Pitt-Bradford held a 1-0 lead in game two as East ripped an RBI single in the second.
But the lead would be short-lived as Elmira rallied for six runs in the bottom of the second.
East got one back in the fourth with a solo homer to left to cut it to 6-2.
Four runs for Elmira in the bottom of the sixth brought the score to 10-2 and Elmira took the win via the eight-run rule.
Maddy Hillery had a pair of hits to go along with East's homer and double.
Maeghan Wynn started in the circle for the Panthers and went two innings before turning the ball over to Jordan Uhing for as many innings.
Kerrigan Hoffmann tossed the last 1.2 innings for Pitt-Bradford.
Up next, Pitt-Bradford will open AMCC action Wednesday as Penn State-Behrend comes to the Kessel Athletics Complex for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
